Identifying exactly what MP4 you have?

Hi all...this site is awesome...unfourftunately, the first thing I learned from this site is how to "unhack" a hacked player. Sadly, my 2GB MP4 player ended up being 128MB. I bought from blown-z off of ebay. I did open a dispute, and will keep all posted.

I also liked something else I read here. Someone mentioned that they make all purchases from ebay with a credit card. If they get bad products or services, they call the credit card company, and the funds are charged back to the seller. This is a very interesting solution. If you get a bad player, call the credit card company, and then just send the player back (with delivery confirmation, of course). This sounds like a perfect solution. I do understand not all of us have credit cards. I would like to see what others' luck is trying this.

Anyway, my question to all is- How do you identify exactly what MP4 player yo have? I know there are many different makers. My hacked player's firmware reports "MP3 PLAYER" as the firmware's name...

magatron002, About 99 percent of these players are unbranded. Wholesalers who buy large quantities can get their players labeled but most do not. Most of the so called manufacturers that put these player together do just that they source components like mainboards, cases, LCD panels, batteries etc from various different places usually based on price and there are many suppliers, then they just assemble in sweat shops. This means that parts constantly change as they source cheaper and newer components so there is no way to define a players make.
At wholsalers web sites you can find photo galleries of all the players they make but generally they do not hold them in stock, once a bulk order is placed they then source the parts and produce the players prior to shipment. This means that even if a buyer goes back and orders another 1000 of the same model they may have the same external casing but the internal and firmware may not be the same.
The short answer to your question is that there is no way to identify exactly what type of MP3 Player you have as the firmware is generic and labeled the same on them all except for version numbers.

I don't think I can extract my firmware I am sure it is hacked. My firmware reads in the display: MP3 PLAYER LKC_5109_03 SDK: V35.37 2007-01-02. I am sure this is a 'hacked' firmware, as the date is after I purchased it. I do appreciate all of the replies. This site is awesome. It took me 3 weeks to get in though. I bought a 2Gb, and reformatted it and I am getting 256MB. Notice the upper & lowercase in 2Gb. I should have noticed this on ebay in the auction.

magatron002, Yes this is blown-z's little scam to mislead buyers with the Gb listings despite the fact that the player displays GB when checked.
Your firmware is a 3.5.37 so you should be able to extract it with s1fwx you can download a copy from the Downloads>Tools section and there is a guide to use it in the Knowledge Base. You will find the links at the left hand side near the top of the page.
