Well, I think I'm leaning away from an AVI player now. 2 GB or even 4 GB for that matter just doesn't seem like it will hold enough movies. From my reading, it seems like a full length AVI movie will take over 2GB of space and an AMV will only take up about 256 MB. Since mostly I plan on watching TV shows on it, I figure the quality is less important. I'd prefer to have more shows to watch on my commute. Thanks again for the comments.

I think I'm leaning towards a 2 GB 1.8" player now....I figure that will hold about 8 hours of video. Is that right? I think I'll have to start another thread to find out.

That can't be right. I don't know about the conversion software that some of the avi players come with, but I know that standard XVID DVD rips are usually around 700mb for a full length movie using MP3 audio. If you keep the AC3 audio, you get about 1.2gigs. With the lower resolution and framerate of these players, I can't see how a full length movie could be over 2gb. If you're looking at viewing tv shows, you can probably get away with 75mb-100mb per 30 minute episode with nice quality.

I'm still waiting on my player to get here (5-10 days, it's been 4, I'm gonna explode! lol) so I don't know specifically how these converters work, but I've done a lot of DVD/(S)VCD encodes and these are all standard file sizes.

Depending on the quality it will take anywhere from 175MB to 250MB per hour of avi video.

Hehe, look at that, my guess was pretty good. I said 75-100 per 30 minutes, so for an hour, my guess was 150mb-200mb. Pretty close to what you said. Not too shabby for not having a player yet.

I've just done a lot of video encoding. hehe

I have a 4GB Teclast T-29.
Two movies that I have on this computer that have been converted for use on the T-29 are Underworld (2hr 1min) @ 228MB and Nightmare Before Christmas (1hr 16min) @ 143MB.
You have to remember that these movies have to be shrunk down a little to fit the screen properly and use the mp3 audio and you have a nice small file size.

lattesurf figured out the settings for the conversions on the Teclasters site, and those are what I use.

Thanks for the information. It sounds like I was way off on my guess. I do like the look of the teclast player the best and with those file sizes, I can definitely live with that. Thanks again. I'll let you all know which player I finally end up with.

Where is the information on the best software to use to shrink the image down to the right size? The information on the correct settings for the teclast would also be quite helpful.

You guys have been really helpful. Thanks again!

Why are clones called MP4 Players, when they don`t play .MP4 at all?
It`s like an MP3 Player which plays Music CDs only.

T39 doesn''t sound as good as my T29
