Just got an ipod nano, is this right......
got sick of messing about with cheap players going wrong so went and got an ipod nano 8GB today, for a start i was amazed you NEED itunes installed!!!! I thought it was like any other player where you simply drop files into a folder in windows explorer, so that has pissed me right off for a start.
Also is it not possible to simply add a few folders full of various files and then browse to one of them folders on the nano and play it? for example i transferred a 3cd dance compilation accross and it just shows them all in a big list no folder segregation, am i missing something here? this could be going on ebay very very soon!!! |
what do you mean by a big list? it should be automatically organized into album, artist, genre, depending on your ID3 tags
|
It's been a while since i've had a good fiddle with an iPod... I had a friends charging on my computer last night but i didn't get a chance to play with it. I'm pretty sure you have to use I-Tunes to rip, organize and load all your music. It should be the application that goes to all the trouble of getting your cd information like Artist, Album and Song and arranging it accordingly. Then it uploads it to your iPod.

Re: Just got an ipod nano, is this right......
right.... what i mean is... ive got a load of vinyl as im a dj and sometimes i rip loads of tracks off vinyl to goto mp3 for my player, now... say i rip a bunch of old skool stuff from 1992 i woud then on my archos player just create a 1992 folder inside the music folder and dump all the files in there, then i could rip some stuff from 1993 and do the same, then quite clearly in the browser on the archos i can simply goto the music folder and it will show me the 1992 & 1993 folders and i can browse them seperately, with the nano they would then be just lumped together in a big long one list when i tried to find them, doesnt seem to have folder support? maybe i just havent got the knack of it yet i dunno....
|
kungfu , the ipods uses itunes to sort your music files into the folders that you set. However, it does not support the folders if you just copy them directly like in the clones.
The itunes attaches some file attributes to each music file, telling the ipod which folder it belongs to and which playlist it belongs to. So basically to organise your stuff in ipod, you Must use itunes. |
you dont have the knack of it yet , unless the problem is that you havnt done the id3 tags , you say you ripped it from your vinyl so i guess that may be the problem , vinyl dosnt come complete with id3 tags , thats for sure
|
kungfu... Ok, theres numerous tutorials online about how to use iTunes. Beats me why you can't just dump the folders on it and play it from there exactly how you want. Thats why i never bought one.
What you may have to do is import your ripped vinyl mp3s into iTunes library, drag and drop to 'playlists' to create and organise your music/playlists in it (create 1992 and 1993 playlists and then the songs for each year) and then upload it to your player. You should be able to make your own 'ID3 tags' within iTunes so it creates all the neccessary folders, names, track numbers and titles on your iPod Is there an iTunes expert in the house? lol |
Re: Just got an ipod nano, is this right......
cheers for the help so far, man ive just got to say that itunes is gay :/ i just dont see why you cant connect the nano up and see the music folder in windows explorer and drop some folders into it , anyone kow of any way to do this without all the nonsense of it getting 'over-sorted' into genres, artists ,albums, amount of backing singers....etc :p

first: get the newest version of itunes
second: install it and plug your player. make sure "iPod" or your ipod is shown on the left side of itunes. third: when it asks you to synchronize your player, please do so. fourth: when the topmost bar where it shows the status of your player and it says everything is ok, start adding your music to your library by going to files=>add file to library/add folder to library(this is self explanatory). if it asks you to convert the songs into a desired file format, it is in your desire if you want to. fifth: when its done, click on "music" on the library found on the left side of itunes and you can see the files you added on the recent step. sixth: highlight the songs that you want to send to your player and right click seventh: click on new play list(i think i forgot it as long as you can find a menu with a sub-options in it or arrows) and you can see your player on that sub-option, click on that option and you can see that the top bar(which i mentioned ago) is showing a process of transferring your files to your player. when its done, congratulations! you've just added music to your player. eighth: click on the eject button somewhere on the bottom right of itunes(not safely remove hardware). when you have clicked it, make sure your ipod is not anymore shown on the left side of itunes. there, plug out your player and enjoy your player. IPOD SUCKS! CHIPOD ROCKS!!! also, only transfer music to your player on the SAME COMPUTER. if you plan to do reverse what i said, all of the contents in your player will be erased because of the synchronization! see? who said ipod is better than chipod?!?!?!! |
Re: Just got an ipod nano, is this right......
cheers for the advice man, will have a look into it later after work, seems such an over engineered way to get tunes onto an mp3 player imo hehe
|
actually, i dont really own a ipod(not chipod) but ive got bunch of classmates and friends begging for instructions how to transfer music to their players.
most of them are ipod fanatics, in where ipod sucks |
iPod sucks. :]

Woo Hoo.. And another thing to add.
If, for example you got your whole 30GB collection of music/video files on a ipod video. And your computer crashes, you re-install your OS to find all your music/video files gone with the format. You would have a very difficult time trying to retrieve/backup the files from your ipod. As the ipod has some weird thing going on, it would rename your files to some random filename (eg XfT2yjQ.mp3, wgHx3fV.mp3, etc) when you add these files into your ipod via itunes. It would also store these files into numerous random folders, about 8-10 files per folder. I don't know what is the logic behind all these. Happened once to my gal's 30GB ipod video, had an extremely hard time recovering the music files from her player. |
Re: Just got an ipod nano, is this right......
Check out the ml_ipod plugin if you use winamp (newer versions of winamp actually have ipod support although I prefer ml_ipod). I've never used itunes and my ipod is 4 years old. It's pretty much a file browser window where you can organize the music on your pod. Fairly easy in my opinion. Maybe not as easy as dragging and dropping on chipods (which I own aswell) but must easier for file searching and organization as well as making playlists. Of course this is pretty moot if you don't have id3 tags which I don't know if you have since you're ripping from vinyls. They do show up via song titles but id3 tags really do make organization easier. Also, this plugin can rip music from your pod to your hard drive. There's other programs out there that can do the same but this one was the first free one I could find since way back when.
