Default n00b trying to understand

Okay, so a while ago I bought a "Electronia" MP4, the model being AV-1496...
I already been cheated, I suppose, because it was supposed to contain 1 GB of memory and only has 964 MB  (not a great loss, I can live with it...)
I used to have a MP3, and used s1res tools to make new graphics, and I loved all that costumization... Now I hear that there are themes for these players, but because of a firmware issue, we cant extract them... However we can clone them, right?
Here's the thing: I've seen many MP4 with more/less function than mine, even though the specs are the same... I believe this is because of firmware issues... I would like to know if I could install a previous version of my player firmware so that I could gain acess to themes and new games (I only have Tetris), or if I could install firmware from other players to acess new functions and theme support.
Is this possible? What should I do to garantee a safe fallback if it goes wrong?
Btw, in my firmware informations on the player, it shows this:

Core: ACT9x_0.50

Date: 2006-10-30

FW: HKX-1.5c-010

Date: 2006-12-10

Please, I know my post is long but could someone give me a straight answer ASAP? Thanks in advance...

EDIT: Here's a picture of my MP4:

OK, the good news: You weren't cheated. All mp players have slightly less memory space than advertised. The remaining is taken up by firmware.

I am unfamiliar with your firmware so I don't know if it can't be themed, but whatever you do DO NOT upgrade your firmware or install firmware that is not designed for your player. You will brick your player.

crazy.neo , it seems that your firmware version would be v9.0.50, which is not yet supported by the firmware extraction tool S1fwx.

S1clone has not been fully tested, some users report it works, some does not work at all.

As booboo773 mentioned, never do any firmware updates. These firmwares are coded specifically for each player, as the hardware components change, the firmware changes. Using someone else's firmware would likely 99% brick your player instead.

Why are clones called MP4 Players, when they don`t play .MP4 at all?
It`s like an MP3 Player which plays Music CDs only.

T39 doesn''t sound as good as my T29

99% !? Man, I don't like those stats!

Anyway, I was already expecting it...Even though it bothers me that I can't modify my beloved player... It's a shame that those chinese sellers chose to encrypt the firmware data or something, because it was the most interesting feture... Well, I guess I have to wait for the next version of S1fwx (even though it's supposed to be a new tool coming out)...

dude, i'm on the same firmware as you are. there's a few sucky things about it, like the fact i haven't found a way to completely turn off the screen after a few seconds of inactivity (it goes to a darkened screen, not off) so i'm really interested in changing some of those features., as well as (maybe) some of the interface, cuz it seems to me it takes too much resources and does very little with them.
this threadpretty much tells us not to try and mod this crappy interface.
