Yes, all of those VX858 clones were rediculous. I saw five different Chinese vendors at CES Las Vegas this past January with different VX858 clones or variations on that.

I don't see any problem buying an unbranded player provided it really is the the unbranded version of the name brand manufacturered by the same OEM that manufacturers for the name brand. Both Onda and Teclast, for example, are only sales, marketing, and distribution entities. They outsouce their engineering and manufacturing. These OEMs will sell unbranded versions outside of China.

Yes I think this is going to be the new Chinese "Peoples Player".

can't wait to see what it's like when I get it.

I love messing with these unbranded players just to see what I can get out of them. (I must be completely out of my mind!)

I've had it for over 14 months now, opened it up countless times and flashed and reflashed it over and over again and I still can't kill it, I guess I must have been lucky and got a good un.

I just hope this new "public brand" is as durable :wink:

Yes, you can get lucky with an unbranded public brand player. You might even get one that was made in the same factory as Onda's or Teclast's if you are lucky (they have fantastic quality). I would personally stay away from those iPOD nano clones.

Keep us posted when you get this player, I'd love to read your review of it.

very quick indeed, about a week for delivery, as soon as i could see it in the hong kong post tracing site it was here within 4 days

Play FX is in this firmware yes, not sure about your though

Got 8 different desktops (back mages0
Player accepts the rkusb tag so can see partition and firmware
Can mod the player images

Arrived today, exactly 7days after I ordered it.
Heres what you get:-


Instructions were for the old Rockchip :wink: (I'm male I never read instructions anyway!).

The Cd is the same as you get on all these players -various video converters for avi and amv, so ok I guess if you haven't got aviconverter.
You get a charger to suit the country you're in (nice touch).
If you plug the charger in you can still navigate the menu, but you cant play music at the same time the player will either crash or reboot, not a problem for me, heres the interface:-


I would advise anyone buying any type of mp4 to copy the entire contents of the player (videos, music etc ) to keep for reference.

Rkusb.tag works on it so you can back up the firmware straight away.

But.. this is what you get when the hidden firmware partition opens, there is a VIRUS in the root of firmware partition of all places. :shock: Its called "fldriver.exe" so watch out for it (AVG dealt with it for me) it's started by autorun.inf, don't panic and DO NOT delete your firmware folders by mistake or format the hidden partition, just let your antivirus software fix it. (All you should have here are 4 folders.)



These players do seem like a big improvement on the old rockchip players and this one does have PlayFX.

This does however, seem to crash more than the old Rockchip, maybe because of the more complicated firmware i.e. more bugs.

I'm not recommending it yet because it has just shutdown whilst playing about with the music options and I can't get it to come back on. I'll post more info if/when I can get it to reboot.

Update, got it back again, I had to format the hidden firmware partition, I had just backed it up 5 minutes before and recopied it again. The problem seemed to occur after I went the display brightness option and tried to alter it.

It just shows it is very important to backup the firmware on these new Rockchip players as soon as you can, before the settings get screwed up.
I will now upload my firmware folders in case anyone else goes into the display settings option and the same thing happens.
Don't be put off buying this player it is very good value for money, just backup the firmware before messing and watch out for the VIRUS!

Seems to be an issue with the 3.5mm audio jack on these players.
By and large the cheap chinese earplugs seem to work ok.
I tried plugging in some better quality Philips and Seinheiser and sometimes you would only get sound out of the right hand and sometimes vice versa. to get sound from both sides I often had to pull the jack plug out a little way. This can be quite annoying

I think I'm going to end up chopping a plug off a pair of cheap chinese earphones (god knows I've got enough of them laying around) to solder on to my better earplugs, I think there is a size/spacing difference in some of the 3.5mm jack sockets.

So to summarise:-
Good:
PlayFX very good sound quality.
Plays unconverted video(very good)
Handles id3 tags much better now (I only use mp3)
Even scrolls the track name now instead of chopping it off!
Can easily backup firmware (you're gonna need it!)
sort by artist, track, album etc
can do playlist (I never use them).
Modding the UI is a doddle.


Bad:
Crashes sometimes(Rockchip has had some "help" from Microsoft, my old Rockchips never crashed!)
There is a virus in the firmware partition (easily fixed)
FM radio reception is rubbish compared to old Rockchips
Audio never resumes from the track where you left off of (both my old Rockchips managed this if I did a "soft" shutdown)
No video resume
Mine had a problem with the 3.5 jack socket, (could have been a one off) probably due to lack of precision in manufacture rather than a faulty socket.(edit seems to have fixed itself now)

Build quality seems ok, not too light, not sure about battery life yet, but seems ok.

If stuff like this bothers you then it might pay to steer clear of these players and pay the 20 or so dollars extra for a better player, say Teclast, S-Flo or Onda

Well, personally i think Tinydeal win out on delivery and sales but not good on quality of product as remember many users that buy these players are not like us enthusiasts.

im glad you like it and i will say that crashing has something to do with your player knob as i have 2 other rockchip players and do not have any crashes. I did suffer reboots on the ramos at the beginning with some video files but this was remedied in an update, so there is something wrong somewhere with yours in either hardware or software

hadphones jack size and precision is an odd one, if these came from the same factory then i could understand but i tried several cheap generic phones as well as my others and none work, i have audio from one side only

Personally i think and extra $20 dollars for a branded chinese player is money well spent

knob, in your player can you

1. set the date
2, set the time
3. do you have video resume
4. can you resize movies to fit screen, or is it automatic with no option
5. did your screen have a protective plastic sticker on it, mone did, but they actually overlaid the player body over it sa most of the edges were under the trim, really awkward to get it off, you can tell if the screen looks a little misty or the feels slightly rubbery

Been playing around with the backlight setting again. It's seems it didn't crash after all, it's a firmware bug, if you the adjust the backlight level any lower than 3 the screen goes completely black!

I must have shut it down and it saved the settings at that so I couldn't navigate anymore! and ended up with a permanent black screen.

It doesn't appear to have a calender or clock, just a stopwatch, thats ok for me I didn't want to have to keep re-setting the time anyway..

The protective screen came off clean and fine.

The player seems to resize automatically with the few video clips I've tried, but no video resume that I am aware of, makd511, do you know how the video resume works if it did have it?

The only issue I have now is the jack plug, the only way round it seems to be to try different shaped ones to see which fits the best, the video resume would be handy though and I'm gonna have to do something about that tiny font.
