Default slicK MP3/Video Player from Family Dollar

Hello. This is my first post here.

I recently was able to purchase a "slicK" MP3/Video player from Family Dollar for only $20. It's a 2gb Model, model #MP417-2CB. It must have been released very recently as the quick start guide and the manual have a 2009 copyright date, and the manufacturers website doesn't even have any support documents for this player yet.

This player can play MP1, MP2, MP3, WMA, or WAV music files, AVI video files, TXT ebooks, and photos. It doesn't have an FM radio. I will write a full review of the player later on this summer.

This player is based on a RockChip chipset, as when plugged in, the device name is "RockChip USB MP3 player" when viewed under the "Safely Remove Hardware" dialog in Windows XP. It also has a "Consumer Update Firmware" application that accepts RockChip RFW firmware, though no firmware for my particular model is listed on the slicK website (www.slickusa.com)

I did have to get the player exchanged just once. The first one I bought worked well for a few hours, and then things went south. I turned the player back on and before the slicK logo appeared, the words "System init" appeared on the screen, followed by the logo. I tried to play some songs that I transferred to the unit just a few hours earlier, only to get a "No file" message. When I hooked it up to my computer via USB, the songs I transferred to the player, as well as the preloaded pictures and video somehow got deleted. Worse, the firmware was apparently corrupted as selecting nearly anything in the menus would either cause the player to freeze up or just turn off without warning. I think it would be faulty flash memory, but I'm not too sure about that. If anyone knows what went wrong, let me know.

I got the player exchanged, and so far, the replacement unit is working well. Im still testing it out to see how long the battery lasts on a single charge, as it has a Li-ion battery. If I run into problems again however, I will open up the player to see what RockChip chip the player has, and to find replacement firmware for it. I still need to find a tool to extract the firmware the player currently has.

I will leave you now with a couple pictures of the player, which I will also upload to the photo album later tonight.
