I was not saying there was anything wrong with your earphones, its just an effect that is quite common with impedance mismatch, it occurs even with expensive equipment. It could also be as you say that the sound is actually distorted from the player itself, its quite possible there is a defect in the audio output. Sorry if it seemed I was casting aspersions on your equipment, I was not.
Its also possible my (ageing) lugholes are not as discerning as yours!
One unfortunate side effect of this whole affair is that now I look at many adverts for things with deep suspicion and feel like asking sellers "is it genuine and can you prove it?" when I see ads for things like 128GB Flash memory and huge capacity hard drives!
