Default Turn Your ChiPod Nanoclone into a PDA

Well, you can't really turn your Nanoclone into a PDA. But you can install Portable Apps to your Nanoclone. And then you can use these apps on any Windows 2000 or later pc.

“A portable app is a computer program that you can carry around with you on a portable device and use on any Windows computer. When your USB flash drive, portable hard drive, iPod or other portable device is plugged in, you have access to your software and personal data just as you would on your own PC. And when you unplug, none of your personal data is left behind.” - from PortableApps.com

Right now, I'm using Portable Open Office running of off my 1GB Nanoclone. It has a word processor, spreadsheet program, presentation program, and more. Go to http://portableapps.com/portableopenoffice to learn more about Open Office.

I'm also running Portable Firefox. I can have my personal bookmarks wherever I go. In fact, I'm using it now to post this.

Running the above apps takes about 180MB. Not bad. Still alot of room for a few albums or videos.

Taken a step further, you could also install a PocketPC Emulator and turn your nanoclone into a PDA. Simply plug it into a PC and fire up the PocketPC Emulator. You could use this to store all your personal information, such as contacts, apointments, calendars, and to-do lists like on a regular PDA. Use Apps like Mobile Word, Mobile Excel, Mobile Power point, Pocket Internet Explorer, or Email. And almost anything else that will run on the emulator. One problem, though. Your emulator can't give you appointment reminders when you're not plugged into a pc. But still cool.

For more information about doing this go to http://www.furrygoat.com/2005/09/portable_ce_20.html

So now, not only can I play Mp3's, and videos, or listen to the radio, I can also use my nano clone like a portable computer. Cool!

Paul

So in other words, it's acting as an external drive to run apps when connected?

It`s like an MP3 Player which plays Music CDs only.

You still have to run the portable apps on a computer. The MP4 Player just acts like an external drive that you can carry from computer to computer. When you run portable apps on a computer from your mp4 player, all your data stays on the mp4 player. When you move to a different computer you take all your data with you. The advantage to this is that you can use someones computer but still have your programs and your settings, favorites, etc. without making any permanent changes, or leaving any of your data, on their computer.

Where do you put the apps on the player?. Can I just make another folder on the drive and name it say programs or apps and drag and drop them there?. Say if I wanted to install something like Skype on the players. Do I put the install.exe on there or just drag a already installed version onto the player?.

Yes. You can just make a folder called "Applicationss" or whatever you like.
You can just install the portable version onto your pc and then drag the folder to you chipod. Just remember, it will only work with portable applications. You can't install any old program to the chipod because most applications need to make entries into the registry. And these changes aren't portable. Portable applications are made to run stand-alone without making changes to the host computer.
