Default myPod | second level screens - UPDATE!

UPDATE

ok folks, i am back.

from the number of emails and PMs i have received on this topic, it seems that you are all keen on getting the files for the second level screens.

the waiting is now over. get it < HERE >

Click the image to open in full size.

in addition to an ipod-style cursor bar and listing elements, i am including four different headers for you to pick from:

1. header from my upcoming myPod release
2. header with back button indicator (based on myPod)
3. header in classic iPod style
4. header with the feathered blue haze area

Click the image to open in full size.

for the first three, you need to delete the text for the menu names from your firmware (i.e. delete the text for music, video, pictures and so on), otherwise this will show up on top of the header with this ugly background.

when you are using the s1res tool to update your images, you need to go to the "mstring" part within U130. in there, you need to look for the text strings which are responsible for the menu titles.

on my player, these entries are all named something with an L at the end:

GAMEL (or GAMESEL)
BOOKL
MOVIEL
MUSICL

and so on.

NOTE: you need to do this only for the language of the menu you are using. so, for me, i have my player set to English. therefore, i go in and delete only the text responsible for the English text. if you have Spanish or German, go in and delete those entries.

for the last header (blue haze), you can leave the menu names in the firmware, but you made need to shorten one or two. for example, i changed "pictures" to "photos."

get it < HERE >

hope you enjoy it!

[strike:9077131a28]hi all,

as you know, we don't have too many options when it comes to skinning: we can cut new images and that's about it (can't change position of elements yet). the only way to make certain things disappear (if you don't like them), is to set them to the same color as the background. for dynamic text (text displayed and controlled by the player OS), we can't even affect the color the text is displayed in on the screen.

given all of these challenges, i have tried my hand at the second level screens. this is what i have so far...

Click the image to open in full size.

this started out more ipod like, but then i started making changes to it (like the back indicator) to fit the rest of my revised myPod screens. i can make a generic version, though (with the standard grey bar at the top), so everyone can use it with their normal iPod themes (like the one from nabilash).[/strike:9077131a28]

you'll notice the funny light blue fuzzy part: this is there because the system text which is shown there by the player (i.e. the name of the area you are in, so "pictures" or "system") has the same background color. so to make it blend with the rest, i created this blue fuzzy area with heavy feathering that blends into grey. on my screen (with the brightness set to 5), you don't really see it. and the blue background behind the text almost magically disappears!

[strike:9077131a28]the scroll bar is fake, but i left it in for consistency's sake (so that it matches the main screens). the next thing, would be to update the font file to get rid of this ugly system font!

will post when i am done.

thoughts and feedback welcome,
d°°n[/strike:9077131a28]

Looks very nice.
I like your idea on the changing the images you don't want to match the colour of the system preset colours (which are ugly btw).

So how do we hack these players a little more so that we can chagne the colors and what not.

BTW I know someone how manufactors these things. Maybe if you guys talk to them about the firmware you can figure away to hack it a little better. Tell me what you think.

you do? yeah, ask them!

maybe they have some other tools (like s1res) which they use. these folks are cranking out different players and firmware versions like summer sausage, so i can't imagine that they wouldn't have some sort of tool to make this easier.

would be great!

Doon, I like all your designs. Specially the "myPod" series. Also, hopefully gta3dude can come up with some solution because by changing the placement or text of the stuff will make the internal menus look a lot cleaner and professional.

hey there,

we should try to collect our questions instead of bugging them every other day with a new question.

also, we should try to make our questions more generic so that they apply to a wider number of screens and issues.

so, having said that, here is my list:

FONT QUESTIONS:
- can we change the font style? how? can we use anti-aliased text?
- which of the font files (8x8 or 16x16) is responsible for which parts of the player interface?
- where and how can we change the font color? some screens have orange, others have blue

LAYOUT & DESIGN QUESTIONS:
- how can the position of certain elements be changed (i.e. can we move play mode indicators around? can we move the time display?)
- where and how can we affect the background color for where text ist displayed?

anyone think of anything else?

thanks,
d
