when a tool is developed that is able to successfully extract and write back firmware to the player. I know it's frustrating to have to wait (those themes can be hideous!) but people are working on it. Just be patient.

This might sound stupid, but I themed my 9.0.48. It looks crappy as it was my first try and took me 1/2 an hour, but it worked nonetheless.

well, from what i understand, even though it is possible to modify the theme using a full version of the 9.0.48 firmware obtained from a factory, or from a disk that may have come with an mp4 player with said fw version... even from this site.. (i think theres a version on this site) there may still be complications and you risk killing your beloved player. No doubt. Sharing it makes it worse because you could give your modifed firmware to someone whos player isn't compatible and kill thier beloved. Not all firmware will work across all players.

The best and safest way to mod/theme your firmware to get an exact copy of the firmware in your player. How? By extracting it from your player, repairing it, backing it up, modifying it and uploading it back.

joecool, i sincerely hope you haven't flashed LaurensK firmware to your player yet. It could very likely leave you with a dead player. And possibly no way to recover the original.. if it does flash and the player works.. it may not function the way you want it to.

This is the very reason why the admin, moderators and others insist on waiting for the latest version of s1res/s1wfx so you only have to worry about modding 'your' 9.0.48 (and above) firmware.

my two cents

Sorry then.
If anyone has the firmware when the new program comes out, I'll need it I guess. Because I extracted the firmware, and saved it, dunno if it will work later on though.

LaurensK , as your firmware is v9.0.48, when you tried extracting using the extract.bat, you'll notice that there errors when the files are being extracted.

It will still create a firmware dump, however with some files missing. So it's not a working firmware, and can't be used to recover your player should you need it in future, due to the missing files.

LaurensK 13th Feb 2007 4:06 am

Yay. Will someone else's, working firmware dump
help?
Because I'd like to save that one when the new s1res is released. Thanks anyway,
Laurens

lattesurf 13th Feb 2007 5:28 am

LaurensK , unless you are faced with a dead player, there is no point keeping someone else's firmware dump as backup.

Most of the firmwares although have the same firmware version number, same casing, etc, but they most probably would be totally un-compatible.

How does the process work to deal with new firmware? I have absolutely no idea but i am willing to help :)

Pimped , the guys in S1mp3.org are the main group creating a brand new firmware for these players, but progress has been slow.

For the firmware related tools, wiRe of S1mp3.de is currently in the process of creating the new tools for the newer versions. If you're good in these software/hardware stuff, perhaps you can contact wiRe to offer your help.

Hey there

thanks for the reply. Yes i understand that s1mp3 are working on the firmware. To be honest, im only good at java programming and i doubt id be able to give them my help. But im not afraid to try. Is WIRE around on this forum?

It gets a bit confusing with all the different firmware and stuff> i believe that there should be a set convention of what details should be provided with the file. Such as a picture of the player, the firmware version, what is included in it etc etc . I fink that the ommision of the picture really throws one off.

Anyways im glad i found this forum, im definitely here to stay :D

Cheers

Asif

Pimped , wiRe is mainly active in the S1mp3 forum. Perhaps you can send him an email via his site to contact him.

It is not possible to ID which firmware is for which player. Even if you bought 2 same players from the same seller in the same day, likely the firmwares might not be the same.

But basically the firmwares in the downloads section are meant for reviving players.

Pimped 16th Feb 2007 11:30 am

ok

Hmm, I get ya. Well say for instance people were told to id their firmware by connecting to mp3 upgrade tool, would that work in all instances? or would dead players not give anything?

lattesurf 16th Feb 2007 12:39 pm

Pimped , for dead players, it depends if there is firmware flashed into the player or not. If there is, the firmware will be listed in the Upgrade Tool. However, being able to list it does not mean the player would work.
Besides, the information from the Upgrade Tool is not accurate. As there could be 100s or even 1000s of variants of the same firmware version.

Pimped 18th Feb 2007 11:27 am

I see, im pretty certain it just needs the correct firmware on my player, but thanx for the lil mpx lesson

Hmm, do you reckon they have updates on s1mpr.org of their work?

actually im gonna go and look myself

pmilladcs 19th Feb 2007 4:38 pm

pimped, they have like a log of the inventor guys talking about projects and stuff.
