Firmware Extraction for new Rockchip RK27xx series players.

There seems to be quite a few new rockchip players now being sold, these can be easily modded, but it is very important to safely backup your firmware folders first, these are located in a 60Mb "hidden partition"

Important! This procedure only works for the new Rockchip RK27xx series players.

Using windows explorer copy the rkusb.tag file to the root of the main memory of your mp4 player.

Disconnect and important to shutdown the player completely.
Wait a few seconds.

Reconnect the player to the usb and the player will restart.

Look in windows explorer for a new drive, it is the "hidden firmware partition", it should be only around 60Mb in size with 4 folders in it like this:-

APPDATA
RESOURCE
SYSTEM
SYSTEM00

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/a...a/rkusbtag.jpg

and maybe a settings file called RKFSWFRC.FRC.

It takes quite a while for the firmware partition to appear so be patient.

Make at least 2 copies of all these 4 folders to your computer and keep them safe, burn extra copies to a cd or even better upload them to www.mympxplayer.org together with a photo of your player and where you got it from.

DO NOT delete any of these folders from the hidden firmware partition OR format the partition UNTIL you have safely made at least 2 backup copies.

Once you have a safe copy of the firmware folders you can remove rkusb.tag from the root of the main memory of the player to close the firmware partition to keep it safe

IF you have an unbranded player it is VERY important NOT to lose ANY of the firmware folders, you may never be able to replace them!

(you can download rkusb.tag from the downloads tools on this site)
http://www.mympxplayer.org/rockchip-...ion-df894.html

To upload your extracted firmware go to this page:-
http://mympx.org/Downloads (you will need to be logged in)
Then click on the link "Click here to submit a File", fill out the details and click the "Submit File" button, and please remember to include a photo of your player.

Some members are reporting that this is not working on their player, I can only guess that the manufacturer is blocking this activity by using an unknown "tag" name, if this is the case there is nothing that can be done to expose the hidden partition, sorry to say.

knob 11th Aug 2008 5:03 am

There are some firmwares that expect the rkusb.tag to be called something else, so all you need to do is rename rkusb.tag to:-

teclast.sys (this is used for Teclast firmwares)
or FRK.TAG this is another I discovered for an unbranded firmware on the net.

So if you find rkusb.tag doesn't work for you try renaming it to either FRK.TAG or teclast.sys and then copy the file on to the player's main memory and try again.

Afaik this only works for Windows Xp systems and Linux kernel v2.6.27 unless someone can confirm otherwise.
I know some user's have had drive mounting problems with Windows
Vista.

update:-It works on Linux too, I've tried it out, but you need new Linux kernel v2.6.27 and you still need to copy RKusb.tag on to your player.

Re: Firmware Extraction for new Rockchip RK27xx series playe

Worth a mention that you can easily make your own rkusb.tag at any time.
Just right click on your player and create a NEW document (any say "New Microsoft Word Document.doc") and just rename it to rkusb.tag and it works just fine.

Btw, here are some typical Rockchip 27xx series players that this firmware extraction method will work on:-

will this work with the MP4 player that starts up mini mp4 player that looks like the onda player?

makd511 22nd Oct 2008 3:57 pm

no, sorry, they are based on older chip and firmware can not be extracted from them and updating firmware and modding needs the original firmware and getting that is a massive problem

sorry

Re: Firmware Extraction for new Rockchip RK27xx series playe

Hello world,
This is my first post in this forum.

I have the RK27xx based MP4 player, MWalker BL621 (Nebula).
http://www.quantum-optimum.com/mp4/bl621.html

As a GNU/Linux user, I were also having problems to access the device. But
luckily the problem has been resoled in the new Linux kernel v2.6.27.

Here is the link/solution to the probolem.
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11423

If you can to acces other DRIVES in the device, you still need to
enable certain feature SCSI module. Here is my simple guide to enable it.

# make menuconfig
Device Drivers -> SCSI Device Support

Enable "Probe all LUNs on seach SCSI device"

Code:

*** Some SCSI devices (e.g. CD jukebox) support multiple LUNs
==>[*] Probe all LUNs on each SCSI device[*] Verbose SCSI error reporting (kernel size +=12K)
      [ ] SCSI logging facility

Compile it and use the new module or restart with the new kernel.

Now here is how it looks when I hooked the device to my PC.

Code:

# dmesg

[ 4802.936760] scsi4 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
[ 4802.937265] usb-storage: device found at 4

Notice that the device has 3 DRIVES.
/dev/sdb - 63MB (system)
/dev/sdc - around 2GB (user)
/dev/sdd - around 2GB miniSD drive.

Now you can mount to the drives. Example: to mount to the device's sys drive.

Code:

# mount /dev/sdb /mnt/usb/

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 2048 2008-10-31 22:27 system00/

Before removing the device, please do and wait until the umount
command finished.
Code:

# umount /mnt/usb
#

About the player.

Pro:
1) It has nice and simple looking look.
2) The UI also very simple with no fancy/animated menu.
3) It has miniSD slot, radio and TV out
4) Plays FLV, MOV, AVI, MP3, FLAC quite well.

Cons:
1) Navigations quite terrible and have to make use of it.
2) It cannot play OGG and MIDI format, even the files are listed in
Playlist
3) Sometimes, it no responsive to any buttons when auto display off and
auto lock are enabled.
4) In the system drives/appdata, there are koules and tank games, but
no GAME menu in UI

Wishlist...
1) Games
2) OGG playback
3) If possible MIDI playback.

Thank you

Re: Firmware Extraction for new Rockchip RK27xx series playe

Hi,

I have a RK27SDK. I tried to use the rkusb.tag file such as renaming this one to "teclast.sys" and "FRK.TAG" but I couldnt succeded.

When i connect the Mp3 player to my computer, i get 2 new external hard drive. In the first one, i have all my commons files like musics pictures etc but when i try to open the second one, windows says me something like "Insert a disk in the drive" :? So i can't make a backup of my firmware, or trying to flash to a new one (mine seems to be quite old).

My Hardware Id is 080422 and Major Id 1.2.

I'm very interesting about customising this device especially the music player, but i cant' do anything without seeing the hidden partition.

Plz help me

makd511 11th Dec 2008 1:06 pm

Insert a disk in the drive ... this is not the partition it is referenceing the SD card and i assume you have no sd card int he slot

if renaming the file did not work

did you turn off the player after putting the file on the player and then reconnect, did you try all combinations???

toutenkarton 11th Dec 2008 1:08 pm

I tried all combinations, but without restarting the device. I'll try now and replie after that. Thanks for the anwser :)

toutenkarton 11th Dec 2008 1:12 pm

Ok I get it working now ! That was idiot from me to didnt restarting the device ... I will now backup the original firmware and than upload to the site for others (but like I sais it seems to be very old).

Thanks again

Thanks for this information, sorry i didn't see this before, I've got Linux as well as XP so I'm gonna try this out!

So basically it means we can access the firmware partition directly from Linux without playing with rkusb.tag. Thanks, this is gonna come in VERY useful.

Thanks you very much for sharing this information

travis90 30th Dec 2008 2:36 am

ATTENTION!!!
Here the solution at the problem of the two devices!!!
If we copy the file rkusb.tag into the root, restart and connect it to PC, we can see 2 devices,
but if you delete the file rkusb.tag, at the next restart the second devices (the hidden partition of the system files) doesn't disappear!...
This happens because we must replace some system file before deleting rkusb.tag!!!

Go to /Resource/BID of the hidden partition
I tried to copy BMP0.BIN on my PC, then I've deleted BMP0.BIN in the folder, then I've modified BMP0.BIN (changing some images with RK27UIEditor2) and recopied this BMP0.BIN from the PC to the folder of the hidden partition.
Then I've deleted the file rkusb.tag, disconnected the MP5, so a red screen appears, because it's changed some images, and finally I've restarted the MP5 ...
So with the next connections the hidden partition disappear!!!

travis90 30th Dec 2008 3:51 am

OT:
I've uploaded this firmware at the link of the first post, but I don't find it...
The name is
Rockchip firmware: RK27SDK-080422-1.2 I-Phone Style

How I should do?

hi travis90

thanks, the admin will make the download active, we just need to wait a bit.

Thanks for tip to close the firmware partition! :-)

travis90 30th Dec 2008 1:27 pm

Oh, don't worry!! Thank YOU (to all the forum) for yours helpfulness!!!
For the download... I didn't know that I had to wait a bit... '^_^ sorry!...

However... putting the solution of the 2 devices at the end of the guide in the first post isn't a bad idea... no? ;)

Dingchow, have you tried to modify the file BMP0.BIN before replacing in the hidden device???
Because if you delete the file rkusb.tag, and then replace the modified file BMP0.BIN, at the disconnection and the updating of the library (before the restarting), you should see a red screen!!!
If you don't see this, you haven't correctly done the procedure...

I've rewrite better the procedure... ;)

It was kinda hard to understand. I did not edit the BMPO.BIN file and did not see red screen. I cant find RK27UIEditor2 to download it. You have a link for it?

Thanks for your help. I tried a firmware (Ramos - version2.23) last night but it failed. How can I do update from beginning. I had deleted original firmware unconsciously. I need to renew it completely.
I am waiting for your help.

If the player doesn't turn ON at the end of this procedure, you can restore it with the recovery guide...
(with RK27DM Repair tool for Rockchip 2706
and
Rockchip RK27 Upgrade v2.5)
Here an italian guide

If somebody wants to translate it in English, there isn't problems ;)

So once you extract the firmware, is there any way to tell what version # it is? I've got a 16GB 3" touch screen that's an RK2706 chipset. The unit's model # is CE-780.

I just uploaded mine, btw. File is RK2706_CE-780.zip.

tried all 4 of the names here, and none of them work. im on windows xp now, ive tried resetting the thing after unplug, then plugging back in, then tried resetting while plugged in, unplugging turning off, then plugging in, etc, but it just does not want to work. does the disk have to be blank? btw my player is the first image you showed but it is 16gb.

how can i figure out what the password for my mp5 is?

I can only use your guide to hide the firmware-drive, if I do it this way:

1. Copy "RKUSB.TAG" to player
2. Restart
3. Now the firmware-drive is shown
4. Move "/Resource/BID/BMP0.BIN" to PC
5- Change "BMP0.BIN"
6. Restore "BMP0.BIN" to player
7. Delete "RKUSB.TAG" from player
8. Restart

This works.

But if I have deleted the "RKUSB.TAG" BEFORE this, I cannot get this to work, even though I try to copy a new "RKUSB.TAG" to the player, and run this.

I have more players, and got it to work on one player I havenīt made any changes at. But another player where I deleted the "USB.TAG" from keeps having the firmware-drive.

Do you have any idea of how to get this to work?

Some members are reporting that this is not working on their player, I can only guess that the manufacturer is blocking this activity by using an unknown "tag" name, if this is the case there is nothing that can be done to expose the hidden partition, sorry to say.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello!

I have Onda mp5 player with 3" touch-screen with 16GB memory. Can you help me please? I did firmware extraction and I replaced the original firmware with another from this forum. Now the player is dead. I can't turn it on. When I plug it in PC I see only disk with multimedia files. I can't see the disk with firmware. I have rkusb.tag in it.

What can I do now???
