I have for some time now been looking for a linux os to run on my player, I am 100% willing to help. Just tell me what you need to know

Sure it's possible. It all depends how good a programmer you are.
The instruction set is zsp400.
If you're interested here is the instruction set:-

And here is an assembler:-

I have tried only once linux on a laptop PC
while I was mixing at the helloween party - nice OS!
If you release this firmware for free I'll try it !
I hope it is well made and the theme is nice
not ugly and not too booring
thanks!

and BTW
as we talk about touch mp4
Rockchip - may be the best?
Onda?
(i-pod touch :D )
I think that in the next few years chinese manifacturers will create mp4 players with wi fi -
the modern chi-phone :)

Hi

I donīt know much about programming, but Iīve seen a mp4 player from Olympus called M:Robe running Opie a Linux based OS from portable media, The M:Robe is a touch screen player also. Maybe seeing this as an example something can be developed, or using the same Opie

Hope this can give some ideas, if not my bad...

Archos 604, 704 and the new 5 and 7 all run Linux, so does the Wizpy and a few of the Sansa pmps.

Hi!

I am a programmer interested in embedded systems. I just read the ZSP400 datasheet and think a normal linux kernel for that mp4 is nearly impossible.

However, a custom build kernel targeting the architecture may run ok. The chip itself supports hardware multitasking, which is great.

The problem I can think of is the lack of a Memory Management Unit (MMU). Without this in the CPU, running user processess is almost impossible, because all programs share same memory layout, so a process may deliberately (or because it's buggy) trash other app memory or even kernel memory.

However, a minimal set of functions (to work with the screen, integrated dsp(for sound) , to work with the touch screen, operations from flash memory) may be implemented, creating an operating system as operative as DOS, where only one task can run simultaneously and that task can communicate with the kernel via interrupts or syscalls.

If after that you still want to use linux in your player, check uClinux.org and wiki.s1mp3.org . In s1mp3 page the staff is developing a replacement firmware for these players. Also there is http://wiki.s1mp3.org/NanoComputer which has a simple operating system.

Cheers,

I really doubt that this has got anything to do with a rockchip linux. From the file content it looks like a standard firmware - have a look at your rk27xx hidden partitions, same structure. A closer look at the BASE.RKW will reveal what this really is.

I started a linux port for the rk27xx but I havent been working on this for almost a half a year now and as far as I remember it builds an Image but hangs even before the kernel print(k)s something to the serial console.

Regards

It is working for real! But I think it is not finished yet!
And for the guys like me that are not Linux users is it possible to install the lonux firware from windows somehow? But if not, I will still put linux on my PC just to try it out!
