New Player Review

Well have had the player 3 days now and have put it through every test I can think of short of killing it and it is brilliant.

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9...957full7xx.jpg

Sporting a 1.8 inch TFT screen that has such clarity, brightness and vivid colour it puts my 2 Nano Clones to shame (1 OLED, 1 CSTN).

Powered by a new CTW500 chip it is fast, will render 160x120 full screen AMV video at 16fps for smooth viewing. No ghosting or blurring. (My clones can only manage 12fps.)
The chip also supports High Speed USB 2.0 data transfer loading 100MB of files 30 seconds faster than the clones. The 250mAh Lithium Polymer battery provided 8 hours of continuous mp3 play with all powersaving features enabled and 4 hours and 15 minutes video play.

The new firmware Version 9.0.43 has been optimized to take full advantage of the 1.8 screen with a wide screen 160x128 layout and at last a player that can not only browse and load folders but individual files as well.

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/8972/cimg07551oq.jpg

To top it off the player fitted snuggly into a $2.00 generic mobile phone case for complete protection and with a standard 3.5mm socket headphones are easily upgraded.

Despite it's small size navigation is smooth and fast with a comfortable easy access button layout and the default theme is quite attractive and easy to live with, which brings me to the only problem I have encountered. With the new chip and new firmware s1fwx will need upgrading. Although it can extract the firmware it does not seem to be able to repair it so themeing the firmware is out for now but as more players emerge using this chipset no doubt we will see version 4.0 of s1fwx.

As far as I am concerned this player gets a 10 out of 10.

Nice review tadad.
First time I've seen this type of firmware.

Wow, it does look very clear actually.

Looks very promising. I noticed that the Waterlily firmware utility does show the ATJ2097.

Since this chiPod can do 16fps, which version of AMV Convertor did you find works the best with this chipset?

I found these on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/MP4-MP3-Player-1...QQcmdZViewItem
this ones silver like his...

http://cgi.ebay.com/1-8-1GB-MP3-MP4-...QQcmdZViewItem
I also found this black version

not sure if they are the "same" firmware as his though.

tadad1 14th Jul 2006 6:37 pm

Mondoe1, Paid $96.00 (NZD) on a New Zealand auction site Trademe.co.nz. Was mailed from Hong Kong.

Vegas215.com, Two versions give me 16fps, 3.57 with the transformsetup.ini edited to 160x120 High, and 3.5.01 which seems to be configured to only convert at this setting.

tadad1 15th Jul 2006 2:12 am

Mondoe1,
I have emailed Lawrence who sold me the player and he has asked if I could forward his email address to you so you can contact him directly. If you can register as a member and leave me a Personal Message I shall pass the information on to you.

very nice mp3 player 8)

xky 20th Jul 2006 11:50 am

Hey does your player record from the radio? because I'm about to buy one just like yours but i asked and they said it doesn't (probably your firmware does)

bsaylors 21st Jul 2006 10:27 am

The original pictures posted by Tadad1 are really amazing. The TFT screen really makes a big difference in clarity and crispness, I shall be getting my TFT mp4 player tomorrow so ill tell you how it looks but im sure its going to be amazing.

PlatinumNANO 21st Jul 2006 4:15 pm

I have a nano clone that has this firmware but it's 3.2.13 and it looks so much better than any of the other nano firmwares I have the only problem is it's widescreen view which I don't like is there a way to change this?

tadad1 21st Jul 2006 6:12 pm

PlatinumNANO, Sorry the only way you could change the aspect is to change the firmware which as you know can become a problem if you get it wrong.
This layout works ok on this player but it would be a bit strange on a Nano clone with the click wheel style buttons.

PlatinumNANO 21st Jul 2006 8:34 pm

The nano I have came with this firmware installed I didn't change anything but when I extract the fw it says 3.5.37 not the same thing it says when I select fw version on the player itself.

I tried to flash my other which has 3.5.35 to no avail but they are identical looking players both with 1.8 in screens, nano clone.

I also have a pink one I sold but it has 3.5.37 yet the menus are completely different and it's a 1.5 and it displays as a 1.5 so I'm not really sure what version is on the one I'm talking about.

The new one I have seems faster is that possible?

tadad1 21st Jul 2006 8:51 pm

PlatinumNANO,
A few players show a different version number on the player than indicated by s1fwx, I think it is generally because of sloppy upgrade coding.
While a few people report that they find 3.5.37 a little faster than 3.5.35 I don't think it is the case with all versions though. I have a 3.5.35 that is almost too responsive and I find myself accidentally navigating to the wrong menu if I press the button a moment to long or accidentily touch the wrong button.
I think some firmware is cleaner than others and so work more efficiently while others still contain obsolete coding and stuff which slows them down. Its a bit like Windows slowing down as it fills up with junk files.

PlatinumNANO 21st Jul 2006 8:57 pm

Is there any way to bit bits of 3.5.37 which is on my new one on my old one.

I really like the music interface and the movie interface.

PlatinumNANO

It would be best if you can post a new thread with your questions so we can better organise everyone's questions/answers. :)

much thanx for your help.

Re: New Player Review

Uxcell is also ebay user Discounttown and Milancentral so you can get them same players from them on eBay cheaper then their website. :)

tadad1 28th Jul 2006 9:35 pm

Guest waiting for confirmation if you have used a hotmail account to register try looking in the junk mail for the confirmation otherwise try to re-register with a Gmail or Yahoo email account as Hotmail seems to be a bit temperamental. You should receive the confirmation email pretty quickly.

tadad1 28th Jul 2006 9:44 pm

Others,
Some of the features you need to look for with the player are:
That it has a CTW500 chipset which seems to be faster and more powerful than the standard ATJ2085 that most of these players run on. The CTW500 also supports High Speed USB 2.0 so is much faster when uploading files to the player.
True TFT screen, the OLED and CTNS screens do not provide the clarity and performance of the TFT.
The 9.0.43 firmware appears to be a good stable performer as well not as sluggish as the 3.5.35 or 3.5.37 versions normally used.

Just be aware that just because the player may look the same they may have completly different internal components.

pierro 30th Jul 2006 7:02 am

tadad1 30th Jul 2006 7:10 am

Tadad1,

Any idea how we I could go about checking these features prior to purchase, or is it just a case of emailing the seller?

I've got a 1Gb nanclone at the moment, and this looks like a great upgrade.

tadad1 30th Jul 2006 4:11 pm

vtsfan, Unfortunatly emailing the seller is possibly your only way of finding the info, but having read some of the answers that sellers leave for the questions they receive most dont have a clue about specs of the players they are selling.

pierro 31st Jul 2006 12:30 pm

hello tadad1 I want this mp4 in 2GB but I want know if it's you who sell or where I can buy this mp4.thank you tadad1.sorry for my bad english

bigmike88 3rd Aug 2006 2:41 am

dear tadad1, is it possible that only player with CTW500 chipset supports AMV at 120x160 landscape mode. Or is this feature firmware related?
If I want to buy another player how could you tell that it has CTW500 inside, do I have to prey open the player to check? One more favour to ask, is it possible to upload the dump of this player and also the full firmware if you have it. maybe from your installation CD that came with the player? thanks.

tadad1 3rd Aug 2006 3:26 am

bigmike88, Auto rotate seems to be quite common in 1.8 firmware. I have 4 different 1.8 players all with different firmware and all support auto-rotate. 3 of the players are ATJ2085 chips and the CTW500.
The CTW500 firmware (Version 9.0.43) is quite different from the ATJ2085 firmware and according to "wiRe" who does the s1fwx and s1res programs contains files he has not seen before. I can not upload it to site because although I can extract it with s1fwx it will not repair so is not a viable working dump.

Unless the seller knows his product there is really no way to tell what chip the player uses other than opening it and checking it out.
