2" Rockchip MP4 Review

Bought this player from flash-items on e-bay:
http://www.flash-items.com/ebay/audi...9_silver_1.jpg

It is the best mp4 I've had. Besides the limited capacity (only 512mb; I plan to expand it via microsd later), ugly uneditable firmware, and a couple of quirks, this player is perfect.

Features:
Basically everything that a normal actions chipset mp4 player can do, this player can do, but better. I won't go into too much detail because it'll be wasting time as most people here already know the features of these players. Screen - crisp and clear, Music-clear, can get VERY loud (volume can go up to 40 last time I checked). Video - excellent quality because of supported AVI format at 220x176 pixels. Radio - stations come in clear enough, haven't really been on the feature much. Photos - VERY clear, one of my favorite features. Text: Clear and easy to read, even though it wraps text to the next line and makes it harder to read. Game - A tetris clone that I played once, pretty good.

Can't really review recordings because I've never used the feature.

Pros:
  1. 2" TFT screen
  2. Extremely FAST interface
  3. Multitasking (eg. browsing songs while listening to music)
  4. AVI video support
  5. Expandable via minisd
... and the list continues (I'll add more when I think of it.)

Cons:
  1. Can't change graphics because not as much is known about rockchip firmware. Main menu is hideous to me, but other menus are OK. (But that's really more of a matter of personal preference.)
  2. Doesn't resume at last stopped place like on most actions chipset players.
  3. Can't listen to music and browse photos at the same time for some reason.

And that's really all I can find to gripe about. Other than that, it's EXCELLENT. I highly recommend it and give it a 9.5/10.

As in my other reveiw, here's a link to the auction and pictures I took of it.

Anne I just recieved my Ramos RM600 today. See the player here

http://www.mympxplayer.org/new-dap-f...sd-vt2618.html

It is very similiar to yours except mine has 2.4" screen, 1G memory and the updated firmware. It is a truely awesome player as you say. I would think that ramos firmware would work fine in your player whenever it becomes available.

The Aviconverter program version 2.1 should work well with your player.

Dave

princessanne1026 17th Feb 2007 1:02 pm

Thanks Dave. I use the AVConverter version 2.1 for videos and it works fine. Wow, the Ramos does seem really nice.

As for the firmware, I was going to upgrade mine because the CD I received with my player came with several firmware samples which I assume are safe to make use of. However, the program that is used to upgrade the firmware which also came on the CD keeps saying, "Rock device not detected" even when the player is plugged into the computer, so I've given up trying to upgrade. Any ideas?

Anne

I believe you must enter the firmware upgrade mode from the players systems menu.
Could you upload the firmwares you recieved as there are next to none available anywhere.. Thanks

Dave

princessanne1026 17th Feb 2007 1:19 pm

Dave - thanks. I'll upload the firmwares but I make it clear that it's a "use-at-your-own-risk" basis.

princessanne1026 17th Feb 2007 1:20 pm

*edit: Oh, and one more thing: does yours resume at the same spot it left off at?

Re: 2" Rockchip MP4 Review

No it does not resume. But to offset that it does have a super fast fast forward.

Dave

princessanne1026 17th Feb 2007 2:23 pm

mine has that also. I love that feature when fast forwarding through TV episodes.

avionik99, princessanne1026,

Do your players support 4gb miniSDHC cards?

Re: 2" Rockchip MP4 Review

I have 1G built in and just bought a 2G miniSD card.

Thanx for the links

Dave

princessanne1026 18th Feb 2007 3:14 pm

the listing said it supported up to 4gb minisd card, but I'm not so sure from looking at those reviews on newegg.... I'll just go with buying a 2gig card after my next paycheck; that's plenty memory for me.

Re: 2" Rockchip MP4 Review

Thanks guys

I'm really disappointed with SDHC cards what's the point of all the gig-age if you can't use them in ordinary devices. absolutely lame.

Also, princessanne
I dont know if this may have been a better choice: http://www.chinavasion.com/product_i...2-inch-screen/
could be hacked and who knows about this seller but I thought you should know.

Great looking rockchip mp4... I am thinking of getting one, but I need to know if this has an external speaker?

mike78759 21st Feb 2007 8:59 pm

I have a question. In the ad, they list AMV and in your review, you list AVI. Which is it? Or does it do both?

Btw, the reason I am interested in knowing is that I bought the one from chinavasion that looks like it is similar but got the 2GB version. Now that I see the one off of ebay, I kind of wish I had gotten the one you did.

I know there have been some on here that are wondering about chinavasion. I will let everyone know when I get my player. I bought last weekend but have to wait due to Chinese New Year to be over.

I hope I like my player as much as you like this one. It'll be my first so I'm hoping I got a good one.

princessanne1026 23rd Feb 2007 12:28 pm

mike78759 - The listing has the specs wrong, which is a disadvantage to them because I'm sure they would have more sales if they had the correct specs. yes, this is an AVI player. I made sure to confirm this from another member who bought the same player before I bought it myself. I don't think it does AMV because rockchips usually only support Xvid AVI format. Hope you have good luck with the player you're about to get!

Re: 2" Rockchip MP4 Review

Thanks for confirming that. I agree that they would probably get more attention to their auctions. This is a pleasant surprise as I really wanted an AVI player but thought that I had 'settled' for an AMV. Thanks again for the info.

mike78759 24th Feb 2007 1:13 am

Just one more question for you. Do you happen to know if the player will handle Ogg Vorbis files?

I am so anxious to get the player. Can't wait until the Chinese New Year holiday is over.

Hi princessanne1026, do you have any tips for getting player to play vids. Used the converter disc and doesnt work and have used number of converters but when I go into the mem and press play it just doesn't work. Help!!!!!!

knob 19th Oct 2007 11:53 am

Make sure you select the correct resolution when converting for your player's screen. for a 2" screen you need to select 220x176 in aviconverter..

princessanne1026 19th Oct 2007 1:45 pm

knob basically said it all. Try using AVI Converter 2 or 3 and setting the screen resolution to 220x176. Wow, I completely forgot about this thread! Thanks for bringing it back, mrtfool

Doesn't resume at last stopped place like on most actions chipset players.

I had same problem, but i noticed way to "fix" it:
pause song, hold Menu (m) botton to get main menu, shutdown your mp4 player, and next time when you trun it on, it should play same song where you left it, it workd on my diel-kreole and nordic(k)
