If you wiggle the connection around, does it make the noise go away? If not, then yes, by all means get a replacement for it as this isn't normal.

The static noise isn't normal that's for sure. I have heaps of players and none have the static noise.

What does it sound like with a different pair of earphones? Best to check in...
