yes, it can, and i did it.
it took about 2 hours to extract.
i've tried pressing the "cancel" button during extraction and nothing bad happened :)
i dont think it'll screw your player up...

Romeri, are you sure that the firmware file is exactly the same as the one running on your player?
i tried to update my player of version 9.1.50 with firmware 3.x.x. and it also stopped at 30%....
