Default Sound Equalization distortion

Hi guys,
I've got a nano Ipod clone MP4 no-branded player (the firmware in it seems to be the Wilson 3.2.16 version).

When I listen to MP3 files using any type of EQ (Rock, Soft,DBB,etc.) the music coming out very distorted.
The only way to listen without distortion it's with Natural mode EQ setting!

Have you experienced the same with your players?

Bye
Max

max_guest,

I haven't experienced that with my players.

Can you try the following:
1. A different set of earphones.
2. Play the mp3 files from your computer and what does that sound like?
3. Try downloading the sample mp3 songs we have on our site and see what this sounds like from your player.
4. Does this happen to ALL your players or just some?

max_guest,

I have same FW (3.2.16 ) version 1.8" screen, china, but it plays fine.
try:
1 hard reset- turn off player w/ on/off switch for 1 minute.

2 check bitrate on mp3s and lower to 128kbps, then try equalizer settings.

Post results

Hi,
here the replies for Admin and Iridium.

1) I've tried with four different kind of earphones (from the "indecent" type in bundle with the player to the Sony MDR-82 type). The distortion with EQ it's present in any phones.

2) The MP3 files loaded in the player sounds perfectly in my Waitec Havin MP3 player, in my Ipaq PocketPc and in my PCs (with Mediaplayer,Wavelab and other programs).

3) The EQ distortion appear even with MP3 present in this site.

4) I've tried to convert the MP3s down to 128kbps rate; no better results!

My considerations:
a) The problem it's inside the player! I think that may be a wrong firmware programmation of the EQ DSP.
I want to remind you that if I let the EQ setting to Natural, no distortion occours at all!
b) The EQ distortion it's most noticeable at DBB setting.
c) The EQ distortion it's greater on the low frequencies. Try to listen to a song with evident Acoustic Bass (Double bass) sound first with Natural EQ setting. After try to put EQ to DBB setting.
If you don't listen to an evident distorted sound probably my player it's fault (or you haven't a well "calibrated" couple of ears ... ).

Ciao

max,

Ok. We've made the easy suggestions. Now it looks like it's probably time to re-flash your firmware w/ your original FW. Please look on the CD that came w/ player for .bin files. Read the guides available here, download the tools, and let Binh help cause I'm unfamiliar with this step. But it does sound like FW problem.

Good Luck!

How long have you had your player?
Can you get it returned for another one from who you bought it from?

That would be the best way, it sounds more like an issue with the PLAYER itself. Not entirely sure if a firmware 'reflash' will help. I wouldn't recommend it because if you read in the "Dead Players" section of the forum, you will need many firmware updates results in "dead players" so please think about this thoroughly before trying to update your firmware.

The easiest step is to get it stored with who you bought it from. Ask them if you can try another player (same model) and see what happens......

max_guest,

I agree w/ Binh. Replacement should be the 1st option. However, if it is out of warranty period (what I assumed) I can't think of any other option.

Question for Binh:
If he has original FW on the CD, couldn't he reflash safely with that ?

Is just the process of re-flashing risky, or WHAT you flash it with ?
I know many people try different FW in hopes of unlocking some secret magical functions , But I mean the factory supplied stuff.

Thanks,
Good luck max and let us know what you did...
I.

Iridium

I've flashed a lot of players and some many times (to test what the new skins look like) so the process of flashing is not a problem. It's WHAT you flash it with is the issue.

Wrong or incompatible firmware = dead player

I don't trust the firmware on the cd's. They are very generic. For obvious reasons, they save on cost if they just ship ONE cd for all different type of MP3 players they manufacturer. I got a cd with one of my players that has over 8 different firmwares on it! I don't dear to try them in case of incompatibility problems.

Thanks for the info Binh,

I had no idea the manufacturers were so cavilier about thier firmware!
This is good to know.

How do you get a full dump for your player then?

Isn't the dump you obtain from extracting your own FW only a partial one?

Thx for everything,
I.

Hi admin, what I would like to know is how to edit the DBB pre-set equalizer settings to my preferences. As a heavy metal fan, my choice is somewhat different. I would like good volume levels on bass and treble, but low mid-range.

I AM SURE it is possible, as I had an MP3 player, where DBB could be controlled by a string in the root folder of the player.

Thanks for helping
