Windows 98 doesnt like mp4 players

I tried to install the MPX player on windows 98SE and it all went well apart from it was not possible to safely remove it, because the icon was not available in the corner, I just waited for the "zzz" on the player. I was OK with this but then I tried to use the firmare extractor from this site, and it would not detect a device...

I also have a windows XP install (same computer, same hardware), which meant I didnt need the driver from the disk in 98, and the icon appeared and the firware tool worked.

can anyone confirm that you can not use the firmware extract tool in 98?

You need to install the player drivers for windows 98 they will be on the CD that came with the player. Then the 98 will recognise the device and you should be able to use the software.

tadad1 is correct.
I hate to say it's obvious to install win98 drivers on the CD but......

Anyway, for others who are in the same boat, but don't have access to the cd, go to 'my computer'' right click on removable drive x, select 'eject' to safely remove drive.

Google 'usb drive win98' or disk drive and install generic usb drivers. Uninstall if they don't work, and try again.

 crikey I'm not that stupid, I used the driver from the disk! also ejecting the drive causes it to freeze when inserting the drive again (on my PC anyway) so i had to reboot everytime. Perhaps its just me

Plug your player in and check the device manager to see if there are any problem devices as the driver may not have installed properly. Also run System Information in Accessories on start menu and see if you have any device conflicts.

If you find the driver in the device manager select uninstall and then reinstall.

Well I don't use 98 that often anyway because I am on XP, so when I can be bothered I will try it and post the results

fizzle05,

Does your player operate ok on WinXP?

I don't use Win98 anymore so can't confirm the s1fwx works on Win98. If a drive appears on your Win98 computer and you can browse to the files from "My Computer", then the s1fwx should work. Does the s1fwx extraction tool work on your WinXP machine and detects it? If not, then the solution on your player is not compliant with the s1fwx tool so it won't detect it.

the player works on XP fine, detects fine and s1fwx works fine

its just 98, this is not really a problem for me, but I was just letting people know if they end up with this problem

windows 98 detects it as a drive it comes up with "HS 2.0 FLASH DISK" and i can browse the files on the drive, but the "safely remove hardware" icon does not appear unlike XP. I eject it and when I put it back in again 98 totally freezes...weird...

s1fwx doesn't work with Win98 unfort.
The "safely reove hardware" I think is a feature after Win98.

The freezing bit is probably an Win98 issue to be honest.
