Bad readable ebooks...

Hi,

today I got my mp4 player (nano clone, 1.5", 1GByte) I've ordered at ebay.

It's great! :D

But there's one thing I don't like: The ebook reader. It's running an orange color font on white background. This is bad as the contrast is very poor.

Can this be improved by installing another theme?
Or is it possible to change the font color?

thanks,
botsj

hello botsj!

well, my ipod fake has an option in the settings menu, called "Style setup". There are 4 different styles that alter the colors of the display. mine was able to display black text on orange background, and with another style yellow text with dark green background

if your mp4 player don't have these styles, then i'd start wondering about modifying the background picture of the ebook function - if it displays a notebook picture behind the text, then you could use s1res to paint the interior of the notebook to a good color.

good luck

petruc, an interesting feature I have not heard of this before. Could you post some details about your player and firmware.
Thankyou

Re: Bad readable ebooks...

Hello tadad1!

I've bought this 512MB mp4 player just two days ago... What a lucky moment for you to ask for it's details, since a few more days the player would've already been exchanged for a 1GB model I was interested but the seller didn't had on that time. So I rushed to get the details and backuped the firmware and prerecorded files of the 512MB model in my hands.

General:
  • iPod fake black, small headphone connector at the bottom, usb and mic at the right side
  • internal unremovable battery
  • 512MB memory (fully tested ok)
  • FM radio
  • one game - that bunch of numbers
  • buttons: up = menu; down = vol; left, center, right = backward, play/pause, forward

About the color style function:
There's a Settings -> "Style setup" option wich contains 4 suboptions ("No. 1" to "No. 4"), which enables respectively
  • dark green background and yellow text
  • black back and yellow text
  • purple back and yellow text
  • orange back and black text
Those colors are used in the music, video, recording, voice and e-book functions, but it doesn't affect the menus - these are always black back and yellow text. Also the page number on the botton of the e-book screen is always yellow, even with the 4th. style active.

Firmware info menu option displays:
Fw: B204G2V1.
Date: 2006/04/17
Core: 3.3.37
Date: 2005/03/15

Appearance:
  • "n-joy (R) by orange cool MP(3)4 player" brand in box
  • "n-joy" written on the front of the player
  • "n-joy Style" appears in black text against white background on the welcome screen (not the regular menu font, but an image)
  • main menu style, icons, goodbye animation and screen savers similar to the v3[1].5.37_B204G2V1_170506.bin file in the download area of the forum

Differences to v3[1].5.37_B204G2V1_170506.bin file at the download section:
  • mine has only the two first screen savers (landscape photos and fruits art), it doesn't have "No. 3" option in the settings -> Scrsaver sel menu, although s1res accused the girls photos on the backup file I saved
  • welcome screen is not the green water scene, but the "n-joy Style" text written big (s1res shows the images were replaced)

Others (I guess there's nothing special in this):
  • already came with "show me the meaning" and "barbie girl" mp3's and lrc's, Stacie Orrico and Jennifer Lopez amv's, the mountain and the farm jpg's and the "marketing" and the "firmware upgrading" texts

In case you want, I have the firmware backup file and the report screen os s1fwx repair.bat about my firmware. Just ask me for them.

sorry if this post was too long... maybe there's a hint waiting for us somewhere around here...

until next time!

Petruc, Wow thankyou for such an indepth breakdown on your players specifications. It is interesting to see the little differences these players have. There are so many variations on firmware 3.5.35 and 3.5.37 that it is no wonder that people run into problems when trying to upgrade. Perhaps you could upload a copy of your dump.bin to the firmware section to expand the collection.

Thakyou once again,

Terry :)

Re: Bad readable ebooks...

Hi again,

thanks for the prompt answer!

Unfortunately my player does not support the "Style Setup" menu :(

If I understood your answer correctly there might be a chance by modifying the notebook background image (if one is used). I'll check this as a next step...

cheers,
botsj

Extract the firmware of your player usin the s1fwx tool.

Then use the s1res tool to open it and navigate around the firmware file. You might get lucky and see that horrible white background. I don't think you can change the txt colour, what if you find that white background, what you can do is change it to a better colour to match the orange text (I don't know what colour though would match orange text???)

Good luck with that.

Re: Bad readable ebooks...

OK, I've checked the firmware but could not find an image related to the notebook background. Seems like they are just leaving it white instead of displaying an image.

So I guess I have to live with it :(

petruc 14th Jun 2006 1:27 pm

oh no!, botsj... your mp4 doesn't display an open notebook as e-book background, the text overlapping the sheet of the notebook? Is it really completely white : ( --- the image is probably missing? that's something to add to the list of strange things those ipod fakes do to us.

botsj

Upload your firmware if you can to this site and we can take a look at it.

Can you give us more information on your player? Better still, a photo of the screen you're mentioning with the ebooks?

Re: Bad readable ebooks...

Mine is same as Petruc's.. ^^
Only difference is that mine s 2gbs..
Anyway, I don't think it's possible to change the "in-play" menu..
For example, I don't think you can change the background of the MP3 execution mode... What can vary is just the 4 colors he mentioned, in the "Style" menu:
1-green
2-black
3-purple
4-red.

In other players I know it's possible to change bg image, because it already has one, but in our type of player we doesn't even have background img for the MP3 execution screen..
If any of you know if it's possible please tell.. ^^

That's new. I don't have "sudoku". I have the other four generic games instead.

Can you extract your firmware and upload it to the site please?

Superboto 19th Jun 2006 3:30 pm

Alright! ;D
Get my firmware here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/2124068/...original_.html
Do you know how to put games into it?
Regards!

Re: Bad readable ebooks...

menuone.bmp and menutwo.bmp are the background files
i made em black but they are use buy every menu so you make evry menu black and on every line on text there white background so it becomes pointless (dunno what i just said) any there you go

tadad1 1st Aug 2006 10:38 pm

Talent, No one has come up with a way to change the background and text colours yet.
