Blackbinder, Sounds like your USB cord could be faulty. The one for your player is quite standard and you should have no problems finding a replacement from a computer or camera store.

If you have been ripped off with a hacked player by a seller submit a report to www.ic3.gov

Has your computer ever been able to detect your player or has this problem only just started happening?

What you can also try is plugging your player and USB into ANOTHER computer and see if it detects it. Then it will tell you whether it's a problem with your computer or cable.

From the sounds of it (ie: "heat up badly") it sounds like a problem with the USB cable too. So try to get a hold of another USB cable and see if that helps solve your problem.
