Default Is a General "problems" Thread needed? (and a prob

I think it would be useful if there were a general problems thread, so i could post things like this in a home of their own.

Ok, First off let me just say, i think its the cable. I'll be testing that soon. But if it isn't.

I plug it in, and it gives me the usb drive screen on the player itself, but windows dosent even respond, its as if only power is reaching it.

It not the ports, or even the computer, i work tech support and had the chance to try it on like 4 machines.

My question is, in the dead player guide, when one bridges the connectors (literally short circuiting, heheh neat), what exactly is that doing?

What effect would it have on an otherwise healthy player? and could this failure to recognize issue be firmware related?

Edit: It worked fine before, this break down seems random, again, probably the cord.

Innomen, It sounds like a loose wire or something in the usb cord. Shorting the chip is like a reset and puts the player into recovery mode as if you wiped the chip. In recovery mode your player will not accept a firmware backup it just does not contain all the files your player needs to recover so you need to load a Full Version Firmware which are not very common and finding the right Full Version for your player is near on impossible unless like one of my players one was on the mini CD that came with the player. However it is possible to recover your player using a combination of Full Version (even if not the right one) and backup dump. So shorting the chip is like a last ditch effort to recover a player that is dead and unless you find a) the exact Full Version for your player or b) the right combernation of Full and dump you may not get your player running again. Not something you should do before exploring all other avenues.

Thank you very much for your detailed and informative answer, I will indeed wait to try a reset. The usb adapters are in the mail

What i have on my player now is a combination, but i dont know of who's work(i tried loading like every file on this site onto my poor player heheh), if i verify that it is indeed just the cable, would it be good of me to post a picture of my player on the firmware version screen along with the dump.bin made with S1fwx ?
