You could try using a different set of earphones, check if the same problem still persists. If the problem occurs from minimum all the way to maximum volume for every single volume setting, there are 2 possibilities:
1) the player's earphone jack has a loose/broken connect.
2) the Action ATJ processor chip has a problem, it has a built in DSP processor and is might what have caused your problem.
I've faced this problem before but it was a matter of a broken connection at the earphone jack to the mainboard, a little soldering fixed it.
