peppolon,
Upgrading your firmware is very risky as you can quite easily kill your player and it may never work again. There are so many players and different firmware know that it is not possible to say which firmware you can safely use.
Before you do anything to your player you should backup your firmware with s1fwx which you can download from HERE and there is aguide to using it HERE.
"Rollyflex" posted information on how he managed to add file browsing to his firmware HERE.

I agree with tadad1.

It's very risky updating your player with another firmware as there is no guarantee that it will work on your player and could render your player 'dead'.

You only have to look at the "Dead Players" section of this forum to see what I mean.

However, I have heard that someone has been able to update it to the 3.5.37 with file browsing...... So if you are willing to take the risk however, just bear in mind that you might have a dead player and might cause you more problems than it's worth.

peppolon,
Firstly did you repair your firmware with s1fwx when you extracted it from your player, it will not load if you haven't.
If your player is not recognised by windows and the MP3 Update Tool gives you a "No Device" warning then you will have to follow the Dead Player Recovery Guide HERE to reset your player. Because you have made a backup of your firmware you have a pretty good chance of recovering your player.
