Default "Format Error" when trying to play AMV video files

Hi this is my first post so please be gentle with me. I have a chinese 1.5" screen 1 gig player (no brand name) which plays AMV files however even though I've tried using diffferent versions of the supplied s/w I still get the dredded "format error" message and the played video freezes after about 10 secs. All the other functions seem to work ok incl photo viewer,radio,mp3 player etc. Please someone out there help me I'm going up the wall.
firmware details are
pma300_006 2005/11/04
ryj-3.5.35 2005/12/16
I will gladly supply any further tech details if required to sort this out

postmanpat,
Format errors can generally be overcome by lowering the frame rate to medium on your conversions.

Well, I had the same problem, on some files I fixed it by using divfix on the five before converting. On others I had to do as tadad1 sugested.

Would you do me a fovour? Im havin problems with my player and as we have the same player would you send me a copy of your firmware? My player works, but on the music player, when some the songs are being played it apears like japanese or chinsese wannabe simbols.
