SOLVED! - XP says disk needs to be formatted
 

I have 2 brand new 4GB players.

One connects to the PC and I can drag and drop music files to it. No problems.

When I connect the other one, Windows XP says the disk is not formatted and do you want to format it now?I can't drag and drop any files to it. I returned this one to the seller in Hong Kong because music was only coming out of one earphone and this was the replacement.

I'm a really newbie - sorry - what do I need to do to get this one working so I can drag and drop? I have XP home with SP2.

I don't want windows to reformat it because looking through some of the forums here I'm scared that everythinhgwill be wiped!

gkoz , by formatting your player, you will not erase the player's firmware. If it is a totally new player with no music files inside, just go ahead and format it with the MP3 Utilities Disk Tool or HP Format Tool.
And from the looks of it, be prepared to end up with much lesser memory space, as your "4GB" most likely is a hacked memory chip. So format both players and see how much real memory capacity you end up with.

I have downloaded both the Hp utility and the Mp3 utility.

Any tips for using this software before I do the reformat?

gkoz , there's nothing much to mention about formating. When using the MP3 Utilities Disk Tool, format it using low-level format. If you encounter errors, then go to the Partition & Encrypt tab, and slide the slider to max (right) and format it. Then repeat the same process, but now slide the slider to min (left) and format.

I used MP3 Utilities Disk Tool and the format low level didn't work so I tried Partition and Encrypt as you suggested and it worked perfectly.

You were right about space I only have a 2GB Player.

Hi, 'm having a similar issue with gkoz. My new 4gb MP3 clone needs to be reformated. I used Windows XP Administrative Tool, disk management to format the MP3 (FAT). I can copy songs to the player, but it does not work properly. It plays the song about few seconds, then "black-out". Do I have to use MP3 Utilities Disk Tool to format the player? If yes, please instruct me where can I down load that software.

I downloaded Version 3.68, installed it, plugged in the MP3 and then followed lattesurf's instructions as above.

Hi Gkoz, Thanks for your help. I can download the MP3 disk tool and was able to format my player. It went from 4GB to 1GB player.
