4GB nano clone - Dud ??

Hi folks,
It seems i have found this forum a little late :(

I recently purchased this 4GB nano clone.

Whilst looking in your forums for an answer to the battery problems I am having I read about using MP3 Player Utilities 3.06 to check whether its a fake.

Well, I did the low level format and what do you know!!! I now have a 4 GB MP4 player that only holds 961MB!

Its not the tool (MP3 Player Utilities 3.06 ) that did this is it?
It is a fake right?

I have also had major problems with the battery, a 4 hour charge only gave me 1.5 hrs of playtime?

The firmware is:
ACT 2097-S72_1
2006/04/25
9.0.48
2006/09/12

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

adammc, Sadly it is a fake, at present 2GB is the max memory capacity that Action chipset players can handle.
Re: your battery you should be getting more playtime than 1.5 hours.
Are you using a wall charger or USB port to charge your player? The wall chargers can be a bit dodgy.
Do you have the LCD set to turn off after 10-15 seconds?
You will find a setting for this on your player under LCD Set>Darkle or Black
The player must also be turned on while connected for it to charge.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes sad indeed. DOes anyone have any suggestions on how best to approach this ebay seller about this?

I am using the usb cable to charge it, yes the screen goes black after 15secs. When charging the screen stays on with the battery indicator moving.

Does it stop moving when fully charged?
Is there a way to know when it is fully charged, maybe the battery indicator level isnt accurate.

adammc, The battery indicator is not overly accurate. On some players the indicator stops when fully charged on others it just keeps going while connected.
Try an overnight charge and then see how it goes.

Re the seller it is up to you how you approach it.
Some deal with the seller others take the matter up with eBay and PayPal.
Once you get any kind of settlement with the seller even if it is only a $5 refund ebay and PayPal will conclude that the matter is settled and that will be the end of it as far as they are concerned.

This is a suggested process shown on eBay regarding fake memory:

How to get full refund and how to expose fraudulent sellers?
Check if the seller is still actively listing the same counterfeit items right now!
After confirmimg receiving counterfeit item, you should complete the Item Not Received or Significantly Not as Described process dispute after 10 days of item closing date so that eBay or Paypal is alerted of the development of fraudulent situation. If you have paid by Paypal, you can also complete the Paypal Buyer Complaint Process to get refund from Paypal within 45 days.
Since you have NOT been provided with what you have paid for, it does not falls into seller's return policy. You are covered by the 90 days protection period under eBay Standard Purchase Protection Program.
Unless these fraudsters would risk their eBay account for permanent suspension, they will for sure be in contact with you quicker than anything else. You then regain control of the situation and the power is again on your side.
Counterfeit is FRAUD, do not settle with the seller unless the seller is paying for all the associated return shipping cost of the item.
You still own the right to provide negative feedback against the seller to alert the fraudulent situation to warn other eBayers.
Provided that you have provided negative feedback to the seller and if subsequently the seller provides you with an unfair retaliatory negative feedback, you have a case to lodge against the seller by requesting eBay for feedback removal to fully protect your feedback.
Effectively you will get your money back either from the seller or from eBay/Paypal. Most important by going through this, you have assisted the process of exposing fradulent sellers on eBay, which will result in permanent suspension of the seller's account.
In most countries, FRAUD is a CRIMINAL offense and injunctions may be brought against the fraudsters to prevent them from moving on under a different name after being banned. Thus, you may choose to contact your law enforcement agencies or each respective brand manufacturers in your region, to report counterfeit and provide them with your item detail and the source of the item.

Hope this helps.

Is there a trick in charging these via USB ?

I have just had it on charge for 4 hrs, the battery indicator was doing the charging thing.

I unplugged it and it lasted 10mins before it said no battery and shut off ???

Any advice ?

Silly question but is your computer now while you are charging it through the USB? Unfortunately it's quite misleading that if you turn your computer, the battery indicator still keeps moving. However, since there is not enough power going into your player if the computer is turned off, it will not charge it and worst, drain your battery life.

Re: 4GB nano clone - Dud ??

I have just heard back from the Ebay seller who sold me the fake.

"Hi
sorry for the trouble. please format the player with FAT by your pc.
and reload songs onto the player. please make sure that the songs you download are in MP3/WMA format.
if that still can not work, there should be something wrong with the memory. If you are sure that it is really wrong, please send it back to us for checking and leave a note (your name/item number /the matter) to tell us the details.

Do I try and do what he suggest and format the drive, he actually sounds like he belives that it is not a fake.

Ouch, I've been bitten too! 961MB after low-level formatting. Advertised as 4GB on eBay.

lattesurf 13th Dec 2006 12:37 am

adammc , you can just go ahead and format the player drive. It'll rebuild the partition back into the original capacity.

If it comes to the state where you wish to send back the player. Check with your seller regarding who should bear the return postage back to him, and after that the postage back to you.
