Default Just Getting Started

I just got this no name MP4 digital player thing today... Yeah, Thanks a lot Laura (the wife)! this is going to be more work than I thought. Anyhow, I have Firmware Version:
LISONG
LSD_501_05
SDK:v35.37
2006-08-07
Unlike every other thing I plugged into the USB port, nothing happened when I plugged this one in. The mini-disk and instrustions are not clearly written and it says that I shouldn't need to download any drivers because I have a newer version than Windows 2000 (I have Windows XP).
I plugged in the USB Port and choose "Firmware Upgrade" from the "Setup Menu" and I get this message on my computer:

One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned. and Windows does not recognize it. (and that it and "Unknown Device")

I am SO LOST... please help. At least give me a starting chance...

fveneno, Do not try to upgrade the firmware, it is a sure way to brick your player.

Quite oftern the USB cables are faulty and cause this sort of connection problem.
You could try a different usb port or if possible another computer, if the player still fails to connect then try for a replacement cord.
