apacer storage concerns revisited
hello,
i hope i am not being rude by re-opening this topic in a new line, but i am hoping to get an indication of whether i can work around my device's restriction, or whether i should get my daughter a new player for christmas. the basic problem seems to be my device wants to self-sort files by their extension and place them in already-existing folders. each folder is limitied to 99 files. so if i want more than 99 mp3s (which would seem reasonable for a 1gb device) i am out of luck because all mp3 files are directed toward 1 music folder. if i want 99 mp3s and 99 jpgs i can do that, each file goes to the appropriate music or picture folder. but this self-sorting problem limits me to no more than 99 of any file extension type. for reference, i cut and paste the last reply i made describing what i have tried. any help, even if its to tell me i'm out of luck, is greatly appreciated. well, i've paid closer attention to what i'm doing now, but before describing what i've tried, i will give a quote from the manual. "the au822 is only able to detect files in the root directory and does not support multi-level directories. Furthermore, you will only be able to store up to 99 music files, recorded files or data files." this, to me, does not sound promising. i tried the following: a) i loaded 99 songs without using folders and they all appeared on the device and play. b) i added a couple of more songs, but they do not show up on the devices menu, and so are not available to play. c) with the 99 songs still in the device's music folder, i added some jpg image files, again without using folders. these were automatically sorted by the device into a picture browser menu where they are playable by the device. d) with all the above songs/images deleted, i tried instead to add a folder with songs inside of it. the device's menu indicates that the folder is there, but the files within are not accessible. e) with all the above deleted, i loaded about 70 songs that took up about 750mb of space. they loaded and played. so it seems that the device has the available storage capacity, but something in the software design wants to pre-sort files into "appropriate" folders, each of which is limited to 99 files. i guess this is why one should read the manual before buying, but this problem didn't appear in the product reviews i had read, and it wasn't something i had thought to look for. very irritating, it really seems to limit the usefulness of the device. any helpful hints on possibilities of working around this? tadad1, thanks for your comments, i'm not sure what you mean by formatting in fat as opposed to fat32 (i'm not aware of having done any formatting). |

Hey rfm!
I got the same problem - I bought Apacer au822 and was shocked while reading manual. 99 files! gosh. It's even less then mp3 cd can hold. So I atacked google and found the solution - update your firmware. You can find it in this forum I think the interface is improved abit, but the main thing - there is no limit for folders and you can hold as many files at it fits. I'm now working on that thingy with Turkish simbols on menu, because I want them damn English (or Lithuanian). All other menus and submenus are english, but main menu has that turkish captions for music, radio and so on. here is the link for F/W - http://www.mympxplayer.org/apacer-au...-pm-df427.html (there will be download button) You installed your mp3 utilities from cd, then go to that folder>RDiskUtility>and launch the program. Else will be clear. |

PornoPablo,
Thanks for the advice. i've come across the firmware update while checking this site and another. not being too tech savvy i've been hesitant about trying to update, especially since i notice some other people have had some problems when updating f-w for their own devices (for example, apparently the problem you've had with the turkish symbols in the main menu). is this the only problem you've come across? as i mentioned this will be a christmas gift for my daughter. looks like i will give it to her as is, and then try and update it later after i've had a chance to learn a bit more. and have her hate me forever if i mess things up!!! when i do try i will post my results in this forum. i notice that there is a new poll being taken regarding buying on-line or from a store. looks like this example would support buying from a conventional store, and reading the manual first (can't do that on-line). the apacer web site and the few reviews i read on line don't mention this problem. thanks again. |
