Default Would FW update help my Nanoclone battery draining problem

I've received for a Christmas present an (unexpectedly) hacked 4GB Nano clone (which thanks to you guys I know is actually a 2GB model). I've now sorted the hack so that XP knows what I've got. It ain't that good but thank god no one paid much for it.

I'm wondering if there is a firmware update around as I've not been able to find the board across various sites/forums.

The board shows an ID of 301V1 (Main) with what I guess is a manufacture date of 20061030YE. This was located under the sticky pad for the screen.

The firmware info shows:
LSD_9301_10
10/31/02
9.0.48
1/9/05

The main reason for investigating a firmware update is the dire battery drain suffered when moving files to the player. It doesn't appear to be the battery as this is fine in normal use (although I haven't been able to test it properly as it runs out every b****y time I move files across) - BTW is it normal for the battery to take 18-24 hours to charge?

Ideally I would also like to be able to turn off the screen during playback to preserve battery, improve folder navigation and also if possible, have random play across folder - is it true that this is not possible? Also, is it possible to apply a different 'theme' to the menu's?

As an absolute bonus, it would be great to be able to use it on Linux with perhaps ogg support.

Many thanks!

ajh , first thing first, never update or upgrade with someone's firmware, you will only kill your player.
Your player is currently running off the 9.0.48 firmware, which at the most is almost impossible to recover if dead. The tools for it are still in development.

Regarding the battery, it should take about 2-3hours for a charge, and should be able to give you at least 3-4 hours of continous playback. There might be some hardware problem, or battery problem if it takes so long to charge up.

To turn off the screen, go to the Systems menu >> LCD Set >> Darkle, here you can set in seconds the amount of time before the screen blacks out. Do the same for both Darkle and Black options.

Regarding the folder/file structure, sadly these players are fixed to with whatever you have. There is no file browsing (only folder browsing), no playlists.

As for theming, i'll not recommend it for the moment yet, as in the beginning i've mentioned that your player is still new and tools for it are still in development.

Why are clones called MP4 Players, when they don`t play .MP4 at all?
It`s like an MP3 Player which plays Music CDs only.

Lattesurf, many thanks for taking the time to reply which was pretty much what I expected. And thanks for the LCD set tip. For anyone else who might read this later, my LCDset menu is slightly different offering only gray mode (screen dimming) or dark mode (screen off). Initially, when setting the dark mode and then pressing the menu key to confirm (as I seem to need to do for most other settings) , this set screen dimming only (Gray mode). Going back to dark mode and pressing the play key actually actually got the dark mode working.

Thanks again!
