Firmware problem and usb connection problem

Hi!
I have 2 problems with my mp4-player (Foston FS 66).
Fm I have in it is:
ACT2097_S72_1
2006/04/25
9.0.43
2006/04/29

1.
I have made a backup of my original firmware, and then I have copied that to make changes in it. I have changed the boot and end screens.
When I then tried to update my Player with "RDiskUpdate" I get an error message, and the update is aborted. Now thats maybe not so strange, BUT, I can't even update the firmware with my BackUp.
So what should I do?

2.
I can connect my Player so it's correct and windows recognize it. When I then deconnect it from the PC, and the want's to connect it again, I get the error message "Device not recognized". (atleast I think it says that, I get the message in swedish, Okänd enhet).
I can then get it to work again by deinstalling all devices I find under USB in the Device Manager.
Anyone knows how to get rid of this problem?

Regards Fredrik

what error do you get while trying to run RDiskUpdate and what version of Windows are you running?

Re: Firmware problem and usb connection problem

Well, I'm running XP, with the latest updates. And as soons as I get the player to connect with the PC correctly I will tell you the error message.
But I know it was something like, wrong firmware, update aborted...

when you extracted your firmware, did you repair it as well?

and what are you tring to upload to your player - the dump.bin after repairing or dump$.bin

you are supposed to be uploading the dump.bin after extracting and repairing. the dump$.bin is the firmware file before repairing

yea thats true...maybe u don't repair it first...u need to repair dump$.bin

Re: Firmware problem and usb connection problem

ooh okey. I didn't know that. But I dont have a dump$.bin, only dump.bin... But I guess it's the same. I'll try then to repair it and make the changes and uploading it to the player. And as I said before, as soon as I get it to connect correctly, I will try it.
Thanks for your answers.

EDIT: Now I have repaired the extracted dump.bin, and now I got a second file called: dump.bi$... Am I supposed to do something with that? Wich one should I use for making changes and uploading?

u should make changes to the file dump.bi$...
repair it ....as dump.bin..

when u upload it....it should be in dump.bin

Re: Firmware problem and usb connection problem

Actually, the dump.bi$ is just the old "un-repaired" firmware download.

If you want to modify your firmware don't change the dump.bi$ file.

Make a backup copy of your repaired 'dump.bin' file and keep one copy safe somewhere else. Then load a copy of it (dump.bin) into s1res and make your changes. That way if anything goes wrong you'll have a backup in the form of an unrepaired dump.bi$ AND a repaired 'dump.bin' file

perfect explanation odyssey

Re: Firmware problem and usb connection problem

Okey! I understand exactly :)... Thanks for the fine answer...

And of course I'll try it as soon as I get it to work, so further on, No one having a solution on the connection problem, it's driving me nuts :)

And again, thanks for all great answers.

Re: Firmware problem and usb connection problem

Now I have repaired the extracted dump.bin... Made an backup of the file. Changed the END screen to my own etc. And I'm trying to upgrade to the modified dump.bin. I'm using RDiskUpdate, and when I try to upgrade the firmware, I get this error message: "Invalid upgrade firmware file"

So, now anyone got a idea what the problem is?
'Cause I dont' :)

Regards Fredrik
