Can see folders but cannot change folders

Hi there,

I'm really sorry if the answer to this question has been answered elsewhere, but I have been unable to find it in all my browsing. Feel free to just direct me to a post if you like!

Ok, I've recently bought my player from ebay. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/0-99-bid-4GB-...QQcmdZViewItem
It is from the seller "ed2city".

It's listed as 4GB but apparently it really only has a 2GB capacity. I've only loaded 1GB of songs on so far though so I am yet to find out if I have issues once I hit the 2GB mark. I have found this out after contacting a few members off the feedback listing to see if they have the same folder problem as me - it was about 50/50 as to if they had the same problem or not.

Anyway, I can't change folders. I know a lot of people have this problem, but mine seems to be a little different. I can get to the local folder, and then when I go to the \ it shows all the album folders I have in there (21 folders currently) but I can't scroll through them. I can't move the highlight bar to select another folder. I press |<<and>>| and nothing happens. So it acts like I haven't done anything and then just goes back to the song that I was playing before accessing the local folder. I was told that the repeat mode needs to be set to normal, which it is.

So like a lot of people I have to click through song by song to get to another folder. It just takes so long that it's not even worth bothering with.

I don't know if it needs a software update or anything. It was only $60AUD so it's still an awesome buy - would just really love to be able to change folders!!!

Any help would be fantastic. Sorry, I don't even know what version it is. It looks like those nano rip-offs but it says "menu" instead of just "M", if that's any help...

Thanks HEAPS in advance.
Lexy.

Re: Can see folders but cannot change folders

Ok just an update with some more info:

I went into setupand this is what it says in the firmware version:

MP3 PLAYER
LSD_9101_20
2006-10-21
9.0.50
2005-01-09

...can anybody tell me anything from that?

It's still not changing album folders. |<<and>>| does nothing still.

Thanks again!

Lexy78...
You never can be too sure about advertised '4GB' players. Some are real and some most certainly are not. I've seen pics of 'real' 4GB players and so far have not seen one that looks like that.

Your first option should be to do a low level format of the player with the Mp3 Player Disk Tool, as this will determine it's true capacity and set it up to start copying files. Unfortunately you will lose what you have already copied to it, but you should already have that backed up on your computer.
You're firmware version shouldn't have anything to do with your problems, so whatever you do, don't try to update it because there currently is no way to recover it once it's over-written.

Let us know how you go

I'd be very interested in hearing if the formatting of the player works, as I've got the same problem with my 2GB player (similar design as Lexy's). My firmware is LSD_9101_11 & 9.0.48

It's extremely frustrating to be stuck in one folder....though I found that if I persevere (i.e. repeat the procedure to exit to music folders) several times, eventually I'll get to move from one folder to another!

Hi again and thanks for your replies,

I will surely have a go at formatting the player in the next couple of days and will let you know how I go.

Actually - I had loaded a few big Photoshop files onto it from work, to take home, and they ended up corrupt so I guess they were going over the 2GB mark and therefore were stuffed. Luckily I had backup!

I'm sure formatting it will reveal that it's only 2GB - it seems to happen to everyone. I just hope that it's not less than that!

Anyway, will keep you updated, and in the meantime, any more folder info would be great!
Gipi, I admit that after 3 or 4 times of not being able to change folders I just give up - I will see if I get anywhere after a bit more perseverance!

Thanks,
Alex

UPDATE!!!!

(And there's !!!!'s in it so you know it's good news...)

My player is fixed!

I just formatted it - so now it's 1954MB (surprise surprise) but now all the bugs are FIXED!

I don't get anymore corrupted files, AND I can scroll through the folders.

And hey, that memory's not too bad still, for the money. And I've written to the seller to try to get a partial refund - I reckon 50% since the thing has only 50% of the memory than was claimed. Will see how I go anyway.

So yeah, anyone wondering whether to format it or not, do it!

It fixed mine and now I'm much happier with it.

Who would have though what a novelty it could be now just to be able to skip folders. Amazing...

Thanks for your suggestions again, and hope this helps anyone who has the same problem.

Lexy.

Lexy,
good news on one front anyway - sorry about the false 4GB!
Will do a format this weekend (once I've made sure I've got everything backed up!) and report back!
Regards, Gipi

Gipi,

Ah it's ok - I expected the false 4GB after reading all the forums. So not a big shock.

The folders are being a bit screwy again though. When it was working earlier I had only loaded about 6 folders on there so it was scrolling through them fine. Then when I got up to about 30 it stopped working again. But now, I've put all my folders within one big folder, and it seems to like that.

For now anyway!

Good luck with the formatting. I got some instructions from someone on ebay because I didn't know what I was doing but it was very easy.

And the seller's giving me a 50% refund! Didn't expect that one!

So that's $30 now for 2GB - not too bad at all really!

Hope you get your player sorted!
Lexy.

Lexy78.. that good new all 'round. Glad you got the player up and running. Good on you for getting 50% of your money back too...

Re: Can see folders but cannot change folders

Ok anyone having this same problem read this.

After experiencing this same problem myself I formatted and it fixed the problem. BUT- it happened again.
So I decided to try and decipher the engrish manual and I discovered that these devices only support 9 folders in the root directory. Any more and you will encounter this same problem.

So like it has been said earlier, create another folder in the root directory and store the rest of ur folders in there.

Lexy78 18th Mar 2007 8:15 pm

Briza5:

Ok yes it has been said earlier, but you don't always know whether the suggestion apply to your device.

My manual was COMPLETELY unreadable. You couldn't even trowel through it and try to make a tiny bit of sense. Every second word seemed to be "elucidation" and then mine went on about some kind of punishment from the knife man - so yeah, nothing about 9 folders.

And besides, I've figured out that mine takes 11 folders in each root folder - so again, what was said earlier, didn't necessarily translate to my player.

Everyone seems to have different annoying problems with theirs so everyone has the right to ask.
