ashley_rb , it could be a faulty USB socket on your player. The connection screen comes on as long as the cable is connected to something. Even connecting to the wall adaptor to charge would show it as connected.
You mentioned that no driver was installed in the computer, so i think it could be a player hardware problem. As usually Windows would retrieve hardware information from the player itself when you first connect it.
However, do try connecting your player onto another computer.
