Find a battery that will fit into this player
I need to find a battery that will fit into this player. The original one measures 3.4x1.4x0.45 cm and has just 2 wires coming out of it that are soldered to the board. It has chinese writing on it. It's rated 3.7V but measured voltage turned out to be 3.88. Where can I find ones like that but with a better life (mine has only 220mAh and dies fast).

I am also looking for a similar size with higher mAh capacity. My SG-158 has a 200mAh battery and mp3's with screen turn-off of 9 secs; lasts only about 3.5 hrs.
I found this on Ebay: "New Rechargeable Battery for Osmium MP3 MP4 player" by seller "discounttown" item # 190104567027. It claims 420 mAh and the seller emailed me with dimensions of 35x15x6 mm. Total cost is about $6us. Looks promising...Anyone try this battery? Is the 420mAh true? |

Pocket_Nano,
Thanks for the link. I went ahead and bought one. I'll post mp3 duration test with this battery (got 3-3.5 hrs with original 200mAh battery)...hoping to double that with this battery !! I'm also looking into making a small polarized connector to be mounted on the back of th SY-158 player, that would allow connecting external battery pack in parallel with existing li-ion battery. Looks like 3 AAA cells (1000mAh) could be "swap-mounted" onto the back someway...I'll post results and pics, if this works out. I also will try 4 AA Ni-MH cells connected into the USB port of the SY-158, to be used as a "portable" charger. These Ni-Mh AA cells are now up to 2600mAh rating !! |
Can anyone confirm which battery on Uxcell is the one with the right dimensions?

The battery is stated as 3.7v at 420mAh and the dimensions quoted to me were 35x15x6 mm. Just do a search on Ebay for "New Rechargeable Battery for Osmium MP3 MP4 player". This looks the same as this one at Uxcell's web site Rechargeable Battery for Osmium MP4 player Model Number: a07030100ux0001 Hope this helps. |
Thank you, let me know how it works for you.

I received the battery from DiscountTown last week, but it was marked as 280mAh; not the 420mAh that was advertised, and that I was awaiting for improved battery duration tests between recharges,
So far have sent two emails to Ebay seller DiscountTown ( Ebay arm of Uxcell.com) to request they ship the 420mAh as advertised in the Ebay listing. So far no reply ...Still waiting a response. Will keep you posted with DiscountTown's response. If they are a reputable seller, then I would expect a reply and resolution. Either they shipped the wrong battery, or the listing is in error! Anyone else have problems wih DiscountTown or Uxcell.com? |
Latest from DiscountTown: No longer has 420mAh battery. It is 250/280mAh !!
I had considered putting the 280mAh battery in parallel with the existing 200 mAh battery in my SY-158 player, but decided that outside mounting was not such a great idea. Instead I made a 4 cell AA pack of Ni_Mh AA batteries (2400mAh capacity) and connected it to the USB port. MP3 duration with this battery-extender gave a duration of about 24 hrs continous mp3 playing with screen blank of 12secs. Works great !! Could use AAA cells to make the battery pack a bit smaller, and I would guess that you would get 12-15 hrs with 1000mAh AAA cells. |

There is a quick way to do this, and it's really, really cheap. Get a battery case that holds 4 AA or 4 AAA, your choice. It will have the positive and negative leads popping out of it. Now go to your neighborhood electronics store and look for a LM7805 Power Regulator or equivilent. They are the size of two pennies stacked on top of each other. I don't have the diagrams right now, but basically you attach the positive lead of the battery pack to the input pin of the regulator. Connect the ground line of the battery pack to the ground on the regulator. Then you take a USB female end (cause this pack will be able to charge anything that charges via USB) and attach the ground to the ground pin on the regulator and the positive pin to the output pin of the regulator. I'll build one this afternoon to show you how simple it is. |
