How to identify player?

Hello all.

I recently bought two of these 2GB MP4 Players from Ebay.

One of them died and the seller replaced it with an identical model.
The replacement has newer and better firmware than the original ones that we purchased and i'm wondering how easy/safe it'd be to update the firmware on the other player to the latest version.

Can anyone recognise the player from the Ebay page?
Or can anyone suggest a tool that i can use to identify the player?
Will AMV Convert Tool identify the player?

The players belong to my nephews and i don't want to try a firmware update if it's likely to kill the player.

Thanks.

warwound , you can find out the chipset of the player by locating the firmware version info, go to System Menu >> Firmware Version.

It is not recommended to upgrade any firmware as it would most likely 99% brick whilst doing so. As each firmware is player specific, and individually coded, you have a very high chance of killing your player even if the version listed is the same.

Thanks for the info lattesurf.

I was thinking that as both players are identical and from the same seller that we might be able to extract the latest firmware from the player with the newer firmware and flash the other player with that copy of the firmware.

What do you think?

I'll be visiting my nephews later so will investigate what firmware version each player reports.

warwound , most new players are now v9.0.48 and v9.0.50 which the firmware extraction tool S1fwx does not support yet. So most new players can't have their firmwares extracted.

Even if you could extract it, it is Not recommended to flash the older version player with a newer firmware.

Re: How to identify player?

Thanks again for the info.

Using each player's system menu we've got the firmware versions.

The older version is 9.0.48 2006/09/12.
The newer firmware version is again 9.0.48 but this time it's dated 2007/03/14.

As you say it's not yet possible to extract this firmware i think we'll leave both players as they are rather than risk killing them with an incorrect flash!
