Default e-book text formating

Hello
I've been trying to use my MP4 player as an e-book reader but the text is all messed up. On my 1.8 inch screen it appears as 16 characters per line and 9 lines per page. Spaces seem to count as characters. Is there any program to format text files in a way that each line would contain 16 characters and any word that doesn't fit into the 16 be replaced by the number of spaces needed for it to be placed in another line?
Thanks
