Default What chipet do I have so I can learn more about modding

ok, i bought a 8gb ipod clone off ebay.

the guy i bought it off, got it from asia thinking it was genuine and was disappointed when it was not so was selling it cheaply. so i knew it was a clone.

it came in ipod nano case, etc got ipod written all over eberything.

supposedly 8gb

when playing mp3's and amv video would get format errors etc. so from reading posts on here used the format utility from the disc that came with it (mp3 player utilities 4.05 ->mp3 player disc manager) to re-format it, it detected the player as being 4gb.

not really fussed about that, works fine now and got it dirt cheap so cant complain.

just want to know how do i find out what chipset etc i m using so i can learn more about modding etc.

i kno from the setup menu the firmware i have is

2093
2006/06/25

9.0.50.000
2006/10/30

i kno from reading that there is nothing u can do with this fw unless u got a copy from the manufacturer. which u can then mod and upload to ur plyer (or so i think, correct me if i m wrong)

so the main problem i have is, i dontkno the chipset used, or the manufacturer, and even after reading several posts i m still a little bit in the dark in what i can do with this player modding/theme wise.

any help would be great, thanks

I know it's an action chipset, beyond that I'm lost on these topics. Don't know how much help that is, but if you could post a picture or link it might help someone else tell you.

simmo2302 , your player would be using the ATJ209* series chipsets. As you have found, it is not possible yet to extract your firmware dump.

Also, even if your player did come with a firmware in the CD, it is also risky to mod it and flash into your player. Usually these firmwares are mass burnt into CDs even for the wrong batch of players. It is a 50/50 gamble to theme this firmware and flash into your player.
These firmwares are usually used for recovering dead players instead, where you have nothing to lose.

The firmware version basically just tells you which chipset and firmware group you're using. As manufacturers find new and cheaper hardware, they'll change the firmware to suit the hardware. But they don't change the version number.

To safely theme a player, you'll need to extract a working firmware dump from your player, and theme it. By using someone else's themed firmware, even with the same exact version, would likely brick your player. They don't practice proper versions control.

So i'll suggest you just enjoy your player as it is, until the tool supports your chipset. Great your player turned out to be 4GB.

Why are clones called MP4 Players, when they don`t play .MP4 at all?
It`s like an MP3 Player which plays Music CDs only.
