Default How can I Scan/Fix or Reformat my mp3 using Linux ubuntu ?

how do i scan and/or reformat my disc to fix a format error from under Linux(ubuntu preferably) i remember doing it once from inside win XP that I was able to scan and repair automaticlly any bad files etc but after hours of hunting within my system I cant find anything giving me similar results while under linux ubuntu ? If i have to I guess i can go use a computer at one of the internet cafes that uses pirate xp and fix it there right ? But i cant believe there is anything linux cant do even better then XP so where is it ? Help someone please. :shy:

Make sure the device is unmounted, then use fsck.

If you want to reformat, use mkfs.

It's Linux! Google the commands or just read the manpages.

Code:
man fsck
man mkfs

WARNING
fsck.minix should not be used on a mounted filesystem.
Using fsck.minix on a mounted filesystem is very danger-
ous, due to the possibility that deleted files are still
in use, and can seriously damage a perfectly good filesys-
tem! If you absolutely have to run fsck.minix on a
mounted filesystem (i.e., the root filesystem), make sure
nothing is writing to the disk, and that no files are
"zombies" waiting for deletion.

I went to the internet cafe and tried to use XP scan and fix my player. It really seemed like It went alright, but when I tried it, didnt change or fix a thing. I went into properties and then the other box I was supposed to go to then checked the 2 boxes to fix any problems automatically. Then when I pressed it to scan a box just poped oped saying it went okay and it was done.(XP was in Spanish or Id tell you the real boxes that came up) now im worried ! i thought this was going to be an easy one. now whats the deal with my option i can do ? I searched the 2 programs or commands and i showed you what it said. Is there something Im missing ? I am so bummed it didnt work this morning under XP. Is there any creative way I could erase whats on my player ? You know whats funny, I added about 10 songs and only a third of them stuck. The others are there but hidden somewhere with the other two thirds of my entire library that turned up missing? I don't even know where to start now. ops:

What, I said unmount the filesystem with umount first.

...and fsck.minix? Wrong filesystem, should be fsck.msdos or fsck.vfat.

Thank goodness you came back ! Hey thanks for hang'in in there with me. You're all I got now. I'm down like a Caddie on four flats to try whatever it is you seem to be talking about, but after googling around the "manpages" etc I still haven't any idea of how to make it happen. I'm really sorry, I swear I'm not like stupid, just new to alot of this. On multiple platforms across the board sorry to say. So with that said, something odd happened today. I added some of these other songs that weren't in the player originally. However I did attempt to put them in and only about 5 out of 15 came up playable. The other 10 did take up space though (possibly). None of them came up that were visibly found that would not play and "trip" the format error causing it to shut off -such as the case with generally most of the files in my player. Today for some reason I tried to copy the files that didn't "take" the last session I put songs in as a test in response to the "Format Issue" For some reason it accepted 9 of the 10 songs just fine. Never even making mention of there possible presence in any way. Go figure ? What do you comment about the warning I found on the manpages for one of the commands(right ? not programs ? )that you suggested. What exactly am I doing anyways ? Any step by step solution would be easiest. Is there anything like that available ? How terribly into depth is it ? thank you so much for all your help ! :?: :?: :?:

Please learn Linux first, if you use it.
