todd , ensure that the On/Off switch is at the On position, and for most players, you'll need to press and hold the Play button to turn the player on.
If you've done all these and the player still does not work by itself, it seems to me that either the charging circuitry or the battery is faulty. As you mentioned that it works when connected to the charger, but not when it is disconnected.
