Firmware problems for Onda vx858 , also lookin 4 vista skins

Hi,

I recently baught the onda vx858 and wanted to get down to business with adding pics videos and things. When I opened the box ,it came with all the necessities and an installation cd and a manual, but in in Chinese .I did a search for installations on google and ran into you guys , read about the good and the bad on the onda vx858. I registered and now I'm asking if anyone could help me on installation. I have plenty of questions ,not sure if all of them will get answered but here goes.........

Ive tried to install new firmware on my vx858 i got 2 days ago, but with everything in chinese, I'm like a fish out of water. I have switched the language to english , then tried settings -firmware update-and i get the chinese language surrounding the "Do Not Enter" simble and below that is a "green"arrow with more chinese. I figure, maybe they want me to plug it to the usb to the pc , so I did . All I get is the blue screen with a pc over a bar that looks like a candy cane on its side and more chinese lettering below. Now im wondering - what now??? Ive installed the Refresh firmware 2.8.1 onto my pc and tried to upgrade to a firmware with the following: 01.00.0017 . so i go to update and it reads:

Finding Rock USB devicei-i-
not found any rock device

Am I missing the drivers , because I really dont know where to begin with that silly cd in chinese , for one I am unable to load any thing .

Do I have to place the rfw files on the player itself or the card ??

Why do i get "Error applying transforms. verify the specified transform paths are valid" when i try to install from a cd with all chinese?

On the Onda vx858 I was able to see which firmware it has and it read:

Fw 00.00.0016
2007-6-28
flash mem 0/ 0MB

Where exactly on the www.onda.com.cn website is the firmware 00.00.0017
and what do I have to do to update ?

If I have drivers ,the pc can read it right?

Do i have to format the mini sd on the pc or the onda vx858, and if i have to format on the vx858 where do you format?

How do I get the firware for the new skins as I think that is a whole lot better then the normal one.

If any one can answer any questions , I would be very happpy

mrdc31...

Tools you need are:

Firmware, that will allow to to upgrade your software from 00.00.0016 to the latest version, firmware is here ---> firmware v00.00.0017 + Vista

Firmware Update AKA Consumer Update, the program that transfer the new firmware from your PC to your Onda player, plugged in USB port in "Upgrade mode" or rockusb, This software here ---> Firmware Update v3.1.2.0

This software has also necessary driver for put USB port in upgrade mode (rockusb). Once installed Firmware Update in your PC, such driver will be located in folder "RockUSB Driver(2K,XP,2003)" under folder "Consumer Update Firmware" in "Files of Programs" or how its called the folder of all programs in Windows XP.

You just need to put your Onda player in upgrade mode using one of two methods:
1. Selecting it in "Setting" "Firmware Upgrade" and pressing the green arrow... within the player, or
2. With your player switched OFF, while its pressed MENU button plug USB cable until you hear Windows sound announcing a new device was plugged.
Then it will ask you to install corresponding driver (rockusb) explained above
Once installed you are ready to transfer the firmware from your PC to the player.

This two methods to put the device in rockusb status are sometimes variables, depending on how many times was attempt to plug the player. In such cases its preferable to restart the computer to release USB port.

You just need to load program Firmware Update and browsing for the file in the folder where you unRAR the firmware package you did downloaded.

This upgrade will warn you about reformatting the flash which is normal. So you better take a backup of all files installed in your VX858.

The simply run the update...

Once ended you device will be in Chinese... don't panic!... look for "Settings" in Main menu (option 9) "System" (option 6) and "Language" (option 1) and English will appera for you to choose.

Then Calibrate you player. This option normally have to be run from time to time.

Good luck!!!

DaremoS, All is good and the onda vx858 has been upgraded! One question, how many skins did it come with because what is diff about the player was the main menu and while navigating i can see the windows logo in the background . Was there something else i needed to look for when I turned on the mp3 player?

To view the images in the firmware you need another tool which is RKLogoEdit (RKLogoEdit) that will allow you to change the screen you don't like.
This is really more tricky as this specialized software is in Chinese and you would need to set your windows to deal with that language.

Wise decision if you are using that Vista version I've posted.
Music screen is very well done, as the Chinese guy who made it do all necessary changes to make it look perfect, for your info to made Music screen it's need to change over 10 pictures.

This aren't good news... if it's showing initial screen but touchpad not responding... was chosen bad firmware this way: if you installed VX858LE then your device is VX858 non LE and vice versa.

Try as much as you can pressing menu while you plug USB cable.

If this not work... open device and short-circuit flash memory pins with USB cable connected. This always work!... just be calm and do thing with no hurry. Device must be opened by nails or you will damage case.

Locate carefully flash memory, normally a Samsung chip... with USB cable connected run the rounded side of a clip along pins until your hear the sound of your PC announcing connection. This will put your device in "rockusb" mode... then you can reinstall the firmware this time choosing a LE or nonLE, different to the one you install first... don't pay attention to version V2 V2 it doesn't matter for the moment.

Search here for more information of "hardware method" if you don't feel sure.

I have the following player
Ebay Link which appears to be an OEM VX858.

Has any got this same player and upgraded the firmware successfully?
If so, how, with what firmware and where did you get it from?

I desperately want to replace the default start-up and closing screens without bricking the player as its the only one i have.

I would advise you to wait before you try to "upgrade" to firmware. Member"dancemammal" is working on a firmware extractor for Rockchip players like the VX858.
He could be ready quite soon, then you could back up your firmware (which you know works) and theme that instead, maybe better to wait a little than risk bricking your player!

snowfruit 21st Dec 2007 4:34 am

Thanks knob - i wasn't aware that an extractor was in the works. I'll wait for that to be completed.

kevinjkok, did your player come in orange box? If so I have the firmware for this player to hand as I have the same player and updated my firmware fine. Mine came from same Ebayer seller. If yours is in orange box you have a clone vx858le, not made by Onda. If you installed Onda firmware then it will kill your player. But you should be able to recover it.
