I won one of those ebay Black "Chi pod" Chinese machines--the 4GB is really a 1GB...
Im not unhappy about that it was cheap and it looks ok..however
i want to update to the best firmware i can..at the moment its

what firmware do i need,and where can i find it..
Id also like to change the interface to the real Ipod type

motleyz , firmware updates are never recommended as it would most likely brick it rather than improve it. Besides you won't gain any additional functions by updating, maybe perhaps only 1 or 2 more games.

At the moment S1fwx v3.2 only supports upto v9.0.43, so you can't extract a working firmware dump. Without an extracted firmware, you can't safely theme your player. However, a new tool would be available soon so i'll suggest that you wait until it is available.
