Using s1clone as a backup method

Has anyone actually used s1close as a working "backup". If it works, I would like to snap off an image of my player, and then if it dies, at least I have a possible recovery method (version 9.1.52, so at this time there are no other options I know about)

The reason I ask, is it looks like it will take 10 to 11 hours for S1clone to finish reading the memory (not to mention what it takes to write it back).

If this actually is useful, I will continue grabbing the image. If no one has used this to successfully recover, then I will cancel out.

Husker , the S1clone software is still in its testing stage, and appears that it does not work fully 100% for everyone. Some users are able to backup a working copy whilst others could not.

However, wiRe has indicated that a new tool for the v9.xx players would be available soon. So stay tuned.

I would suggest you grab the clone. Leave it on overnight or something. If your player dies you are very unlikely to find a 9.1.52 firmware which matches your h/w config. So although rewriting the image has been reported to be sometimes unreliable, it may be only chance. And if the s1clone tool is improved then at least you will have image to write back when it works properly.
And (I keep saying this in other posts) it would be good if you could upload the clone to megaupload.com or similar with details of your player, which a) could help revive dead players and/or b) provide some feedback on how effective the latest releases of s1clone are.

Since it appears that the ROM image is in the first part of the file, I wonder if you simply clone on a totally clean system (fresh format, and not "connected" to create the default folders, IF you could bail out on the clone after an hour or so?

The first part is VERY slow to download. I think this is the firmware. Then the speed of down load goes up (at least I saw this when I had WMA files on the unit). I had made a 700mb image, and the thing died

If I look at the resultant file, the first part obviously is the ROM firmware, and then there is a FAT32 section, and then the WMA files start. Thus, since I have formated clean, I am re-running, and when the ROM and Fat32 section have been downloaded, I am going to cancel. I figure if S1clone can rewrite that data in case my unit dies, it will "fix" and the unit will have regained it's firmware.

NOTE I am not dumb enough to "test" this without it being a last resort (i.e. dead unit).

I've done a backup from my 2 GB mp4 player (CTW500 whit FM) and i get a big file(+ 500MB). When i need to repair the player i try to flash the backup with all versions of this software and it just don't work.

That is my fear also. I will do it (the backup), just on the unlikely chance that it "does" work (if the unit dies). Since there is no "proper" ROM backup (like the 9.0.43 versions), I guess this the the best we can do, and simply hope that we NEVER have to use the image to try to fix the unit.
