ONDA Knockoff Upgrading Help

Hello,

I bought an mp3 player in Chinatown NYC today, called the iBoost, it is a 1 gig player, and from the looks of things, basically looks just like the ONDA 858/858LE.

http://iboostintl.com/display.asp?CategoryID=1987

"iBOOST TOUCHSCREEN MP3/ MP4 PLAYER" is the name of the player.

It says that it is "firmware upgradeable," and I really would like to upgrade it to an ONDA firmware to get rid of the ugly startup/shutdown logos, but I am not sure what Firmware to use. I tried the 858OEM Firmware that was posted here, but it the Firmware Update tool said that it wasn't the correct version.

Does anyone have experience with this player, and is there a way to find out if this player is based off of the 858 or the 858LE? I want to upgrade the firmware but I don't want to brick my player.

Thanks in advance.

The problem is there are apparently a few versions of that player out and the newest ones are not compatible with Onda firmware. I don't know of a way to tell if yours is one of the compatible ones. I would just sit tight, at least your player works now. If you upgrade to a wrong firmware you may or not be able to recover it. Did your player come with any firmware on the disc (there's even no guarantee that that will be the right one)?

Also, do you mind saying how much you paid? I live near there and if the price is right I may go pick one up.

Hi.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The disc just had the AVI converter software on there and the upgrading tool. It's kind of silly to say that something can be "Firmware Upgradeable", yet not have much support for it.

I downloaded the 858 and the 858LE firmwares from the Onda site, and both work with the firmware tool, so I don't know which one is mine. Argh.

It was about 90$ for the 1 gig. Now I wish that I ordered it online because it's a cheaper here for more storage. Oh well.

BEWARE!!!... I would start apply non-LE firmware... LE could lock the player!!!

if it works, i wouldnt bother messing with it.

with it being an "off brand" there is a 99.9% chance that your going to ruin your player.

you basically have 2 options....

keep it and deal with it, or...

sell it on ebay and get some of your money back then buy a legit onda player

There are more OEM in the market of original VX858 than VX858LE.

VX858 can be easily upgraded with other firmware... with VX858LE it's needed to open the case and use the short-circuit method.

fyi dremos, he has a copy of the onda that he bought in Chinatown from a non reputable source. the likelyhood of this being a real or OEM onda vx858 is very slim

well, from what I have read and seen, there are many chinese makers coping the onda style and interface for these itouch clones.

if the player is not branded by Onda or bought from a reputable source then i wouldnt even try to "upgrade" the firmware, because with the number of copies out there, there is a chance that it wont work.

but hey, i dont claim to know everything, i just know even the OEM onda players were having great deals of problems upgrading the firmware because the manufacture decided to stop using onda's firmware and create their own, per MP4nation.net http://www.mp4nation.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=383

and even then, their is no guarantee the non onda firmware will work.

so like i said, if its not broke, dont fix it

Of course... I was lucky enough to load a VX858 firmware and work has a breeze NOT having a firmware backup... now I see how lucky I was

Thanks for the help guys. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this particular player. It basically looks the same as the ONDA, but I am not sure which one. I think I will leave as is for now and not have it brick.

the only way to see if it is even close to the Onda is to take it apart and look at the board and chips.

otherwise, you just have a decent looking player with only 1gb of memory
