Software to convert audio files to a smaller format?

I am searching for a program that allows me to select my whole MP4, and convert all the audio files to a smaller format, replacing the old song being converted by the new, converted one once the process finishes, in the same folder, same tag and all that. Anyone knows a program that allows me to do this?

Also, what format should I convert to? And at which rate/settings?
Please help me. Thanks in advance.

WinLame will let you grab a load of mp3's and convert them and it's free, but it won't do files inside multiple folders.

As for bitrate it depends how good your ears are, but don't go any lower than 128kbps in any case.
