does formatting a fake nano with windows erase firmware ?

i want to format the a fake nano 2 gig, but don't have any backup of the firmware operating system - does formating this in windows leave the softwear thats running it and just get rid of my mp3 files and stuff ?

Formatting only deletes all of the files such as MP3's, AMV's and Photos, it does NOT affect the firmware.
