Problem with software and USB device not recognised message

I am a complete newbie at this but I will try to explain my problem as clearly as possible.

I bought one of these from a Hong Kong Ebay seller:

4 GB New GEN MP3 MP4 FM REC VIDEO PLAYER

It came with a software but when I run the disc it only has setup instructions for Windows 98, not XP as advertised. Is there anyway to make this thing work with XP?

Also, (and I don't know whether this is related to my first problem) but when I connect the usb cable to my pc I get an error message:

"USB device not recognised. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it."

Is this because I don't have the software loaded?

Also, how do I know if this MP3/MP4 player has been hacked? Does it mean that, if I finally get it working, and it doesn't hold 4gb but only 2gb that it has been hacked?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Problem with software and USB device not recognised mess

Hi alittleaussiebleeder,

Welcome to the board.
Majority of these players *don't* need any special software for your computer to recognise it. Think of it as a USB memory key. It's just plug and play.

The "USB device not recognised" is related to your player. A lot of the time, the problem is due to a FAULTY USB cable. So, if you can, try another USB cable instead and see if that works. If it does, then it should come up as another drive letter and you can access it the same was as you would with a USB memory stick.

Try that and let us know of the result.

Thanks very much for that - it seems to be working.

Can you please tell me what it means by being a hacked player? Does it mean that the stated capacity isn't the actual capacity?

I've copied 438mb to it and when I try to copy more songs I get the following message:

cannot copy (filename). The directory or file cannot be created.

When a player is hacked the capacity will be say 4GB or 8GB and only really contain a 1GB or 2GB Flash Chip or maybe even less if you are very unlucky.

Follow this guide to see if your player is hacked:

If the seller does not reply to your e-mails create a PayPal Dispute and you will probably get a full refund.

I hope this helps.

Thanks once again. I will give it a go.

I'm assuming that if it is hacked then it can be classed as a fake item
