Default low level format on mp3

Hi, I would like to know if firmware of mp3 devices is stored in the integrated flash memory or if it has an dedicated memory to store the firmware. I'm asking this because when I plug the mp3 I can't access to the flash drive and I cannot complete high level format either, that's why I want to make a low level format on it, and after that format again with high level format, but the problem is that I'm not sure if doing a low level format on the flash drive will erase the firmware from the mp3 because I don't know where it's stored, and if it's erased I don't count with a fully functional firmware of the device, I have one backup but I don't know if its working, even that backup was made with a non fully operational mp3, the device wasn't working when I made it, but it had another kind of failure, so it might work. So the question is, where is stored the firmware of the device, and if doing a low level format on the flash drive of the mp3 will erase the firmware of the device. Thanks a lot.

As far as I know the firmware is stored in the main chip. That means that low level format of flash memory does not affect it.. I have carried out many low level formats of flash memories on different players and never erased the firmware..
