Random function only plays a block of songs
 

Hi

I got a player that looks similar to this image -> unit image

Firmware version is 00.00.0001 date = 10-06-2008 (not sure if the date is in mm-dd or dd-mm). I am presuming it's a rock chipset

Now, it has the following Play modes:
Random or Play All

And the following random modes
Repeat One
Folder Once
Folder Repeat
All Once
All repeat
Intro

I have loaded 1000 odd songs onto the unit which get picked up and play (when I manually go through the songs). The problem I am having is that if I select to play random songs and choose 'All repeat' it only randmosies blocks of songs, say about 350 or so or them, and it will ONLY randomise these songs (from around A-G).

The only way I can get it to play other songs is to select 'All Once' then manually skip though the first 350 block, but then it just randmosies the next 350 songs (around H-N).

I have tried various things like formatting the unit, placing all songs in one folder, renaming all the files to a sequenced number, but none of these fix the issue.

I have contacted the seller about this, but I am wondering if anyone else has this issue and if they have some how resolved it?

no fix for this, this is a limitation of the firmware on the player

this is an old player basd on an old chip an this problem was never fixed and never will be im afraid

there is no firmware update that will bring the fix and if you do feel the urge to update then do not

sorry but there is and will not be any fix for this, it is down to bad firmware development of which the chinese developers are very good at!!!!

That sucks, I purchased it for that reason. the radio doesn't work on it also, so I will definately ask for my money back .

Out of curiosity, what does it use to calculate what it plays in random mode? A certain number of songs or name, etc?

not sure what it calculates its just bad coding im afraid, when they made these players they did not code for large amounts of memory, they started at 1gb and since then they have not taken into account the larger capacity, so maybe this is the reason

get your money back if poss and we can guide you to cheap players that can do random properly, but may cost a little more

Random is just a poor man's Shuffle.

Random tries just to pick a song at random, using a random number generator and songs can get repeated at any time.
If it is poorly programmed you will get repeated patterns of songs, random is used where no playlist exists.


Shuffle on the other hand will take your whole music collection and shuffle it just like a pack of cards (play starting at the top and working down) so that no songs will ever get repeated in a session, the shuffled songs are stored as a playlist on the player.

The better players will always have the Shuffle option.

My old Rockchip player had the random play and my new RK2706 player uses shuffle and I found the shuffle works perfectly.

Like makd511 said, better to get a new player that has the proper "Shuffle" and NOT "Random"

Thanks guys, if only I knew that (shuffle thing) before I purchased it. Oh well, I'll try and get my money back but if that proves too difficult looks like I got an oversized USB stick on my hands!

i have a 4gb version of this play. it has the shuffle option and works qite well. If I have my total number of songs equal 350. Any more it plays them in a block of A-H then I-Z.

you said earlier that there are other players, which ones will do shuffle and allow more than 350 songs to be shuffled?

shuffle is an odd one on chinee palyer

even on new rockchip based player shuffle is faulty in early firmwares so even if we pointed you to an unbranded new rockchip player there is no dead gaurentee that it has a version of firmware with shuffle fixed

the only ones i know of are branded chinese players that get updates and have had it fixed, or more expensive players like meizu, but these are $100 ish or less (a bit)
