low space on mp3 player

I have bought yesterday a nippon mp4 player with 2GB memory. When I check the aviable free space I have only 200 MB free space and I didn't copy anything on it. What can I do? If I format the device I lose the operating system of the device. How can I check what is the file who need so many space?
Please help me if you can!!! Thanks.

If you format it you DO NOT lose the firmware.

Go ahead and format it. If it still doesn't show the full 2GB take it back to the store and get a replacement.

Maybe it was really a 256MB unit.

2Gb = 2048Mb = 256MB
