Default Error message on mp4 player: file ver 255

I bought not one, wait for it, but two so called Mp4 players for my

kids for xmas. No name brand, made in china. 2 gb, nice blue box.

According to the tech specs in the back of the booklet, they support,

mp3, wma, mtv, bmp and jpg...... All the other media work, save for

the mtv format. The software that came with, MTV Video COnverter

V1.11.4.

So I converted my avi clips to MTV format, loaded them onto the

player. and I can see them, but when I press play, the following

message appears on a black screen:

file ver: 255
ver. not supported

Aaaaagh! @#$%! I exclaim to myself, what is this? How can I rectify

this? I need to play video on this little black box..... Can any of

you fundi's help? I am running XP and I also have the SLD COdec pack

installed.

Oh! Yes, I also converted using all three available screen size

options, same result...

thanks
Morty

What does setup -> firmware version show?

Or just open it up and post the CPU and board ID.

There are two different versions of MTV format, one is used by very old Actions chipsets and the other by ALi chipset.

Morning Lolita, thanks for your quick response, I went into the setup menu and found the following info:

SYS INFO:

FW: 11.71.65

Free: 1896MB
All: 1994 MB

This is all very interesting and thanks for your comments!

Do I still need to open the little bugger?

I think it would be best to open it up (carefully) if you can.

You can find the board and plate ID numbers on there and that will give you a better indication as to what type of chipset and version your player is running.

The whole bloody thing is held together by two small small screws, bitch to open.....

ANyhow, there was a copper plate over the back, which I leifted gently to reveal two chips, the bigger of the two reminded me of the a pc's cpu and had legs on all four sides of it.... there was a large round sticker on it stating ROHS. I lifted that up to reveal the following info on the chip, to the best of my ability, as the writing is quite faint...

ALi

M71018 A1
0747 TL07
Xksk34890 1GA

Onto the second chip, smaller in size with only pins on two sides of the chip.

Once again...... nice round chinese sticker on the chip, similar to stickers that look like a quality stamp.... gently removing this sticker , revealed the following faint information..... (This is roughly what I could make out)

Hunix
H727 uu08ABA
TPCD 82lr
Mb

Once again, the only clear script on the above chip was the name Hunix

Put everything back together, lost a bloody screw.... but the gizmo still works.....

ANyone have any ideas?

thanks again people.....

ALi chipset, M71018 is not very familiar though...
Hynix flash, presence of letter "A" probably indicates it's really 2GB.

If you search this forum for "MTV" or "ALI" you should be able to find appropriate conversion software. There are several other users with ALi chipset players here.

This is getting interesting now, I managed to download MTV video converter ver 1.12.11, which is a step up from the version I got with the player, after converting the file, I attempted to play it, and viola! The error message had changed to :

File Ver: 003

Ver. Not Supported...

..........

Well it's a change from file version 255 error..... so, does this allude to the player being alright, but only able to play a certain standard of mtv file......

Just to be able to play a video file ......

How many versions of this mtv converting software is there? it seems... I get a different file version error that is not supported for each different type / version of converter i use..

Is there anywhere a person can download small mtv clips of a different versions , just to test them on the player, kinda like a database of differently formatted clips.....

thanks again for all those that showed interest......

Damn! Replying to my own posts....

Hehehehe! Anyhow, I found the sample video section on the forum, downloaded the sample clip in mtv format, for the 1'8 inch screen..

I see in my book, it has 1'8 inch (128x160)......

anyhow, when I went to play the clip, I got the File Ver: 003

Ver. Not Supported... error message...

I do not know what to do now.... I have downloaded other converters to no avail.......

bear in mind, that I bought two of this gadgets and both give the same error message......

Change the settings on the converter, i.e. try different framerates and whatever other settings there are.
