MP4 Touch and slim MP4

I purchased for my daughter a slim chinese copy of the ipod with a round button feature. This stopped working the day after the return policy and now only shows an hour glass. I contacted the seller who told me to mail it back to him. Which I haven't yet. I also purchased an MP4 touch like the one Admin has in the gallery. This still shows the menu, but the computer won't recognize it, and when it does it says the drive is half full, but it doesn't show anything.

I don't understand all the jargon for upgrading the programming in these. Can someone walk me through identifying the proper firmware, software, drivers etc so that we can have these working? thank you

Also, the disks that these came with might as well be in chinese, because I cannot understand what the various files are for, or how to install them. Clicking on a setup application installs something, but what it is I don't know (except one is a firmware editor, whatever that is). Nothing changes with compatibility or usability.

The frozen-at-hourglass symptom is common to Actions-based players in which the firmware has somehow gotten corrupted. You can find more information about these players at s1mp3.org. Unless the flash is heavily damaged, extracting and reinstalling the firmware may fix this problem. However, the newest players do not yet have tools available for this. You'll have to open up the player and read the part# of the ICs to determine what exactly your options are.

thanks lolita, I got the slim one open and found

large chip Samsung 704 K9K8G0800A PCB0 FHL297P1

a smaller chip had AK1025 8I027AB 0IM

pc board QS91B16 ver 0.4 2008/08/01

screen XYXW029-1 090311-B

I have searched s1mp3 and have not found these. I think I'm supposed to search for firmware associated with AK1025 and QS91B16. I did a google search and only found a firmware download on Chinese forums and it requires a login and some kind of internet funds, that I couldn't figure out, nor do I think it would be safe.

Am I looking for the right things on s1mp3?
